You know how there's tons of different types of music out there, including classical, rap, etc? There's been something I'm been wondering for a while by now.
Under what category would video game music (or some movie or tv backgrounds) fit under? Sometimes it doesn't seem like a piece would fit under any of the categories... _________________ im realy ded |

I think CG is a class of it own. OSV (Original Sound Version) maybe. I dunno. _________________ But enough talk, have at you! |

You can't just lump all video game music into one category. It depends on the song. _________________ Locked

hmm...
It depends on the game. For FF1, Mega Man, and Dragon Warrior, I'd call it classical. For Batman, probably industrial techno/rock. _________________ Play Horrible Fantasy NOW! |

Video game music is under the category Video Game music.
TV soundtracks is Soundtrack.
I think... _________________

Different games have different music. A lot of the earlier games had a classical kind of feel to them (Legend of Zelda is the most immediate memory) or more of a silly kind of throw-off style (most puzzle games). This certainly still exists, but with the addition of audio capabilities of the newer consoles, a great many different kinds of music are heard now. However, if one were to try and group a large chunk of gaming music together, I'd suppose they would have to be called "background music", which is why it is closely related with movie soundtracks, etc. Simply put, the music is pretty much never the main focus of a game; instead, it usually serves as a 'soundtrack' to what is going on in the game. Sometimes it is made so well that the music can stand on it's own without the game, but usually if this is the case people who enjoy the music are those who have played the game and can identify something about the game with it. At least, that is how it seems to be in my experience. |

I'd have to agree with no_shot on the music grouping.
I don't really think you have to identify something with video game music to enjoy it... Well, I hate listening to video game music unless I'm playing a game, but my brother, on the other hand, is constantly listening to it, even if it sounds nothing like "normal" music. So as for out-of-the-game-listening-ability-thingy I think it depends on your taste. |
