I am pleased to announce me and Mr. B's entree to Gizmog's 2003 Halloween Contest: Pitch Black This is my (Shadowiii) first ohr game to be released to date, and now most certainly won't be the last.

Get them here:

Pitch Black

http://www.castleparadox.com/forum/gamelist-display.php?game=308

Pitch Black (for computers without BAM capabilities)

http://www.castleparadox.com/forum/gamelist-display.php?game=311

Be sure to read the "readme" included, because it contains basic instructions on how to run the game. This is NOT a standard OHR game by ANY means, and we DONT teach you to play it in-game because we felt it would take away the feel that we want (we want you to be engrossed somewhat)

Also, this game is hard. Very hard. It CAN be beat in under 10 minutes (I have done it) but I have memorized the entire thing. If, perchance, you think that something is way screwy (battery life too low, etc) PLEASE email ANY comments to me. This may say "Final," but we really want to improve it and make it perfect before judging. ALL COMMENTS are appreciated.

The two versions are because the game has a running event in which you can hear something approaching, and you have to turn off your light or you are killed. If your computer doesn't play bams, you'll basically get wasted. We took that entire part out for the BAMless version (so you could say it is an 'easytype'), but we DONT want this version to be judged. We'll probably update it later making it possible for people without OHR sound to have that effect without music.

Oh, and it hasn't been tested (BAM version), so if you find yourself dying every 60 seconds or so, email me and I'll fix it up.

Both versions have a detailed hints and tips TXT included, ranging from general tips to basic, non-spoilter tips to a complete walkthrough.

What else?

Oh, yes. Enjoy.

being somewhat a fan of horror games. I've been interested in this game since I read the description on gamelist a couple of weeks ago.
Problem though, I kept bumping into "failed to unlump 52.ocx" error message and the darkness script doesn't seem to work.

ps: the myst interface looks neat.

Hmm, yes, I got this error as well. I'm taking it down for now (false alarm, he he) but I will make sure it works ASAP (as in, hopefully within the next 20 minutes)

Crap, what is wrong...grr... Oookay...

Followup: For some reason, the OHR won't let me save over the file. Mr. B, what did you do!? Just kidding. Anyway, don't download it until further notice. Sorry for that, Friend, I though it would work...it worked fine on my computer...ARRGH! (swearing ensues)

Currently uploading new improved versions.

Note: Initial battery length will probably be increased at a later time.

It worked perfectly on my and Mr. B's computer besides the bugs mentioned in teh Read-Me (and all of them can be easily fixed by following our troubleshooting)

*Screams*

I'm uploading both versions at once (about 2mb) so wait a few minutes before downloading them.

If you still have problems, tell me and we will try to fix them as best as we can.

Note: Its 10:30 PST and I have SAT II's at 7:00 tomorrow...so....I'm going to bed. If you have any questions/comments feel free to post them, but they probably wont' be answered by me until around 10-11 am PST. That is of course, if Mr. B doesn't get on an answer them instead. Raspberry!

I finished the game in 30mins. The batteries thingie is okay I think, just about enough to finish the game. I mostly just flicker the flashlight and explore the mansion in total darkness. I was stuck for 10 minutes because I missed a particular item... it was kind of tricky because there are two zoom events really close to one another so I thought that there's only one zoom event in that particular area.

The atmosphere is pretty good, nice song selection/background selection. The maptiles are nicely done too. However... that castlevania song at the end seems out of place.

*spoilers*

I checked the hint file once on the pitch black room. Just to check if I've missed a switch that'll turn the lights on the room on or something... because I was doing it by trial & error. I almost thought I was cheating. Seriously though, if you intend to make a black maze like this, some stationary visual cues would be fine... at least if you put some in, the players will know that the maze is supposed to be explored by trial & error.

Aside from that, I find the game very enjoyable. You've got my vote that's for sure.

Thanks for the feedback. It is greatly appreciated. Happy

Hmm...1/2 an hour? That sounds about right...the game is short and is supossed to be. In a later version we (or I) plan on making it bigger. A third floor was originally planned, and the rooms had quite a bit more zooms, but it never happened.

Of course, I still have 'til 9:01 tonight, so who knows? I might go crazy at the last minute!

As for the darkroom...eh...that was actually a cheap corner I cut. It was SUPOSSED to be another Myst room (a gruesome one actually) but the picture never got drawn...eh.

The Castlevania song was actually my choice...and I know it sucked. I'm actually going to replace it before 9:01 tonight.

Again, glad you enjoyed it, and your feedback is greatly appreciated. If I post a newer version I'll let you (and everyone else know)

Toodles! (...I can't believe I just said "Toodles.")

Just finished it, and it was quite good. I had to go into custom a little bit (I had missed an important switch), but other than that it was pretty easy (not in a bad way).

Good News/Bad News

Good News: Updated the file.
1. More music, placed MUCH more effectively.
2. All the rooms but two have at least one new object to see. The study has three new ones. Raspberry!
3. Remember the ending movie? Yeah, it sucked, right? Well its actually a movie now. And it has better music, etc. IF you beat the game, you may want to look this over.

And the updated version is my submission to halloween contest, don'tcha know.

Bad News: Solar flare killed my internet. I'm uploading from a friends house and he has 56k, so if you are trying to get the new file you'll have to wait 'til probably 7:30 PST.

There wont' be a "Bamless" update until after my cable comes back. Sorry, only the regular one is updated.

Enjoy!

Edit (8:00 PST) Glorious internet has returned. Bamless file is up as well.
