We could always just take that thing off the post and give me a break. I don't want anyone sneaking in my .rpg files! ... It's embarrassing. |

James has already said that he can't encrpt the RPG file as it would take up too many resources/ time/speed.
The only way you could encrpt the RPG file and keep the password secret is to encrpt game.exe along with it like FyreWulff has done/will do. Sorry, there's really no other way. Even then, the RPG file must be decryted at some point. _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |

I actually have created some programs from Turing for OHR, but they were like all screwy, although the one would destroy all the maps and text boxes. |

Hey, I just realized another potentially good thing about this program...
Grab the password of a horribly out of date game... say... one soooooo old that the current game.exe won't play it correctly... like... Magnus or that really old version of W;P1 I found on one of my CDs (this is just an example, I don't expect anyone to have that piece of (uh, just stick in your own word here, I'm too lazy))... open it in custom.exe, save it... and whalla! You can now play it on the current game.exe.
Might be a good idea to do that and upload the old files to CP that way...
Whoa! Hey! I'm not saying I feel either way for the program, it's just that Alphaknight wanted to see what Magnus looked like and I couldn't show him (for some odd ball reason the older game.exe once again is refusing to acknowledge the older games again) right away. Oh, I eventually did, but the thought just occured to me that using the program this way might be one of the few good points.
And don't anyone start up again on how this could lead to ripping... we've covered that... thank you very much. _________________ LJ.Art

Well, I already guessed the password to Magnus about a year ago (it's "Ryan"), and I don't think it worked on a new game.exe even after I updated it. |

Heh, I actually thought about making the "Guess the Magnus Password" one of my multiple choice test questions way back when Specplosive was planning on developing a sequel to OHR Millionaire. It would've been disrespectful to the creator of Magnus, but hilarious to everyone who had to answer the question.
Just for the record, this is what the question would've looked like had the quiz game ever been sent to me and if I actually chose to include it:
#.) Which selection is the correct password for Magnus?
a.) Ryan
b.) Magnus
c.) LOL
d.) Password
Sigh, brings a tear to my eye.
And Uncy's right about the password not working on later versions of CUSTOM. I remember it worked on one of the updates from a couple years ago, but not on any of the releases since.
Hmm, maybe James should figure out how to simulate that for future versions. _________________ Progress Report:

Actually, I just said that Magnus didn't work on new versions of game.exe, even after being updated (ie. saved in a recent version of custom). But I have seen old games in which the password didn't work, I even found out the password to all of Valkayree's games that way (no, I've never divulged that information, it wouldn't be right).
But I did guess the passwords to Magnus and Bugamon Quest back when I was working on Magnus 17. Helped a little, too. |

!?!?!?
Don't tell me you've never heard of RPGFIX and LUMPFIX!
http://www.hamsterrepublic.com/ohrrpgce/download.php
RPGFIX updates the file to the latest version without requiring the password, and LUMPFIX attempts to repair a file if it's corrupted. Another possible "good" reason for this program is out the window. |

I've tried to use RPGFIX on Magnus - it doesn't work. You can pay the game, but almost every graphic changes to solid black/transparent and the textboxes didn't function. It seemed that with such an old game, the palettes were overwritten or something, along with stats, text, items, etc. - basically the entire game disappeared. _________________ UP DOWN UP DOWN LEFT LEFT RIGHT RIGHT A B START |

there's only so much that either can do for something as old as magnus. if you use rpgfix on magnus and then play it, all you've managed to accomplish is the removal of the obsolete file warning. the game looks like that mostly black screenshot of magnus in the gamelist. and as for my other example (yes, i used rpgfix on my seriously old copy of w;p1 just to see what it would look like), every animated cloud is still replaced by cloud with bridge over it. games that old are simply out of the scope of what rpgfix can deal with, and thus why opening and saving in custom is a better option.
and just in case anyone wonders, opening and saving the old w;p1 file does work. but that hardly matters since there's a better version up on the gamelist. _________________ LJ.Art

That shouldn't matter, since what RPGFIX does uses the same code from CUSTOM (from what I understand). Did you use Lumpfix too? |

Um...well if he doesn't use encryption, what's the password for? Er...I'm using encryption in a broader sense, of any way to hide data. Probably an inappropriate sense... |
