Hey all. It's nearing the end of the year!
Everyone know about Nintendo Power's yearly Nintendo game awards?
How about we have OHR Game awards?
I'm willing to run voting again, since I didn't really have any
problem with it last time. I spent a while thinking of awards suitable
for a ceremony like this, and this is what I came up with.
Who's all for this? Anyone against it?
If you're for it and there's another award that you think should be on
the list, tell me about it! This is all just a bunch of ideas now,
but hey, it could be something great to do yearly.
(Don't vote :p)
The Awards

author)

I would support this. Although it's a bit close to the top 30/15, I like the amount of possible categories. However, I'd suggest removing the ones like Most Irritating, Game You'd Like to Kill, etc. - the ones that are derogatory in nature. While it would be fun to bash people you dislike by voting for them there (I can think of a few myself), it just wouldn't promote the sense of community that we're trying to maintain here. Leave those awards for Scyree and BSOHR. _________________ UP DOWN UP DOWN LEFT LEFT RIGHT RIGHT A B START |

Hehe, I was mainly kidding about those anyway. Besides, the same people/games would win every year! |

So this is just for 2003. Ok.
DDDDDDDDDAAAAANG! Me and Mr. B dropped our super-sexy project because we both feel inadequate...our next project is more medium sized then large I hope (as soon as school calms down) but you never know, we might have something by the end of the year *finishes Stop^-10's story*
Um...maybe we should do this in January, after we are sure all the games of this year have been submitted. Mr. Nintendo said he'd have some stuff later on...
YEah. Sounds good, thought. That is a lot of catagories

Well, that's one reason that I forwarded the idea before I actually started planning; I don't want to be the sole person behind this.
Shadow- It isn't just '03 games; you can vote for any game. Maybe I should include separate categories for games made in '03 only? |

I say go for it. Because its categorised, its quite different from the top 15. Reminds me of the OHRympics.
But I think that that's far too many categories, and some of them are repeats, such as several of the general awards which go on about battles.
Also, I think you should drop the Most emotional music and Most inspiring music.
Maybe you could have it that this year we vote for all games up to this point, and next year we vote for 2004 games only. (Or maybe we vote for games from the last 2 years, so that any particularly good games that override everything else eventually drop out) _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |

Otherwise Arfenhouse, Walthros, and Wandering Hamster are going to completely dominate the awards. I say 2003 ONLY releases for this year, 2004 for next, etc. There have been enough awards and rankings for the same 20 or so games over the past few years, and it's time for people to actually start playing some of the newer games instead of getting hyper-nostalgic about the older ones.
This being said, perhaps it's time for CN/IM/Aeth/^3 to add a 'date of publication/release entry for each game in the gamelist so we know which games are released when. |

I don't see any usefulness in that. Most people already know that they're old games because they're better than other games.
Plus the fact that the game's author is probably long gone with his "life" or something.
Edit: Er, this is in response to Fenrir. |

Does someone really make one game a year??? I am working on 5 or something. Most people get all, "OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY", and release all 5 games in a year. Of course that depends on how fast they are. My point is, maybe release them sparingly and that way we will have something to look at 5 years from now. (Although some people may not look that far ahead of time) GO CRAZY! AHHH!!!

Not to dampen anybody's spirits on the matter here, but the OHRlympics, which was the last awards ceremony to attempt this, only had six voters participate, and those voters could choose any games they wanted. Having said that, I think that limiting the votes to only the games released in 2003 will have a highly undesirable adverse effect. Instead of encouraging people to play new games, I think it'll drive people away from voting entirely.
For example, there were only four games released this year that I played all the way through, and two of them were Halloween games. Do I really want to vote for those same four games over and over all the way through, when most of them probably wouldn't be eligible for certain categories (like original music for example)? I can tell you right now that it's highly unlikely that I'll be picking up any new games before the end of the year, so my desire to vote in this capacity would not be very high.
Figure if most of the community chose not to vote having had the freedom of picking from the entire OHR library, then I'm not so certain that limiting the votes to a single year will make it better.
Granted I don't want to shoot down this idea of keeping it yearly completely. Professional awards ceremonies manage to make it work, so there's a chance that this could work too. But what you need is people committed to vote (who have played all the new releases of 2003), and games that are worth voting for (which the professional markets have). If either is missing, then I'd suggest keeping it as a general vote for all OHR games until the day comes when making it yearly is worth it.
And if it's free range for all games, then maybe it'll be yet another excuse for game designers to produce better games so that Wandering Hamster, etc. won't dominate every category, all the time, every year.
So there you go. _________________ Progress Report:

I was throwing around the idea of having separate awards for recent and unrecent games, but the more I think about it, the more I'm leaning towards sticking with my original idea. So what if the same games always win? If they're better, they're better, and only a fool would vote for the same game if a better game came out.
But assuming this award ceremony goes on, how should voting work? We could do a 'pick your top 3' method, but I would need at least one other person to help with tallying simply because of the amount of votes. We could have one vote per category per person, but would that produce accurate results? Hmm. |
