Ever wanted to run the OHR in a window? Ever wanted to hear BAM but can't because VDMS doesn't work for you? Enter Dosbox. It's basically a DOS emulator. The download is less than 1mb, making it easy on you 56k people out there. If you want to run the OHR in it, do the following after installing it and running it (there will be a Z:\> prompt):

A. Type without quotes: "MOUNT C C:" (replacing C with whatever your main drive letter is)

B. Type without quotes: "C:"

C. Navigate to the folder with your OHR stuff in it (see below for quick DOS-navigating instructions if you aren't familiar with DOS)

D. Run Custom, and enjoy.

There are a few downsides to this program, however:

A. You can't edit any hero past #2, even if you type their number in (some funky stuff happens and it scrolls back to #2 automatically). This is fixable by not editing your heroes in this window. Happy

B. Any submenu that has left-and-right scrolling (textboxes, tags, attacks, enemies, heroes, shops...) has a similar problem, but they are usable, unlike heroes. Simply type in a number above 2 and scroll like normal - if the scrolling messes up again, type in another number.

C. It is slower and you need around a 1ghz processor or above to keep it running at a decent pace.

D. GAME.EXE doesn't work in it.

And the upsides have already been mentioned. Enjoy this little thing.

(Basic DOS Commands:

cd directory - Changes to "directory" (a folder name). Basically, doing this is like double-clicking a folder in Windows.

cd .. - Moves up one level to the previous directory.

dir/w - Lists files and directories in the current directory.

dir/p - Another list, but with a different style.

filename - Executes the filename. Example: To run CUSTOM.EXE, just type "Custom" while in the directory where it is in.)

*cues the Hallelujah chorus*

Yay! Now I can mess with my comp's CD player and OHR at the same time without worrying about whether or not Custom'll crash when I minimize the window!

Does this allow windows 98 users like me who can't hear BAM, to hear it? Even if it doesn't I'm going to get it.

I don't have a copy of Windows 98 to test it on, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

I'd also like to say that I got this working on Linux in the past. I played a little bit of my own games on it, but it was mega slow. BAM worked though, which really suprised me.

I've yet to use it on Windows itself, but I assume that it'll work better than it did on Linux.

OY! My dream come true! I actually was talking to Minnek some time ago about how nice it would be to have this kind of thing. He said it was impossible, or something like that. So I prayed, and prayed, and finally my prayers have been answered. Thank you greatly Aeth. Much Obleeged!

PS: Oookay... Holeluja! Cheesecake for everyone! Except Minnek! Razz

PPS: Moral of this post: I am thankful, and never say never.

Oh, by the way, for those who want the BAM emulation but find it too slow to run in the window, I believe there is a way to run Dosbox full-screen. I haven't tried it myself, but that might make it run faster seeing as that will probably make Windows dedicate some more resources to it.

LeRoy, I said it was impossible with regular DOS. This is a DOS Emulator, which allows it to bend/break the rules.

As for full screen running it faster, I don't see any noticable change when I switch to it.
