What exactly is the appeal of first-person shooter games?

Well, for me, it's the CHAOTIC DESTRUCTION that takes place. I mean, for short-term fun, nothing beats launching rockets at and pumping millions of bullets into your brother. I play TimeSplitters, though, as opposed to Counterstrike or something that requires tactics and thinking.

It's fun sometimes to stop playing games that require a whole bunch of strategy and thinking and just shoot everything that moves.

One of the reasons I like Counterstrike is cause I get to play against a bunch of people I know. It makes the experience more interesting.

Playing Final Fantasy 11 in first person mode with head phones on is great way to immerse yourself into the game's world. So the appeal of any first person perspective game is to draw the player into the created world in a way that has nothing to do with emotional attachments to the characters.

I guess it's because they don't need to care about rendering the main characters, but FPS have some of the best graphics.

I think it's all the work that goes in to building a 3-D engine and world. Also, it's a lot more realistic when you play a game that lets you see everything from the character's point of view, making it feel you are part of the action, rather than seeing everything as though you were an observer with a remote control watching everything from behind bullet-proof glass.

I like taking my anger out on those polygonated things instead of real people. Like a punchbag, but different.

The world graphics, if they're done well. Like metroid prime.

Ok, so FPS games appeal to those who:

1. Desire meaningless destruction in their subconscious
2. Play games so they can stop thinking altogether
3. Want to play a multiplayer game*
4. Like pretty pictures
5. Play games just because someone put hard work into it

(On a side note, I'm not talking about FFXI/etc, just shooters.
And the discussion was never about why designers choose to make such games, it's about why people PLAY such games.)

* The only reason that I consider viable whatsoever is the third one.

But anyway, thanks for the replies. I was just trying to piece something together. Feel free to discuss further if you'd like.

Multiplayer. And a lot of FPSs are just designed so well, that all the weapons, characters, and levels just.. work.

I disagree with no. 2. Jedi Outcast is a FPS, but it requires quite a bit of brainwork for the puzzles. I've noticed most FPS's now have some puzzles or tricks to spice it up, but "pure" FPS's are just shooting (think C&C Renegade...bleh)

I suck as FPS's becuase I don't have good aim. Raspberry! They also seem a "grunt"'s game, so...yeah. I do enjoy four player deathmatches though, especially when the person is a family memeber. Smokin'

Shadowiii: You misunderstood me. #2 is one of the reasons that certain people play FPS games(as Squall said in his post)

I'm not trying to attack the FPS community as a WHOLE, just certain individuals who play games for stupid reasons. There are a variety of other games which make no sense to me in terms of why you would want to play, like The Sims and Grand Theft Auto.

(Although, technically The Sims would appeal to those who are obsessed with interior design and refuse to actually design something.)
