Let's discuss this year's Human Day theme, shall we? First of all, it is Accurate, worthy translation vs. Incoherent translation, is it not? Those words are paraphrased; I believe the actual theme reads "The Protagonists represent accurate, worthy translation. The antagonists represent Lost in Translation." Another quote at the bottom reads, "Neither the best nor the worst in a work is untranslatable...-Nietzche." From this, one can gather that the theme is basically about communication skills. Good communication skills are seen as good, and the lack thereof is seen as evil. Makes sense, does it not? Am I right in my interpretation of this theme? Is the whole purpose of human day to make a game about a theme...or is there some darker, more sinister motive behind it all? Is Human Day really about accurate artistic expressionism, or is it a contest of superiority, like everything else? Will it praise right judgment and skillfulness, or is the purpose solely to out-achieve one another?

Honestly, man, I really haven't been able to understand the concept of Human Day or anything like that, but somehow I have the feeling I don't really want to know and you really wouldn't want to know what I'd think.

Am I missing something, or is it a American thing? Could you please tell me what Human Day is, please?

*sigh*

OK. 1. Human day is sort of like christmas, except without santa or Jesus. It is on the same day, but rather than celebrate the "True Spirit of Christmas" or "The Spirit of Giving", we celebrate the human potential. It is basically just another contest, like blitzkreig fiction or blitzkreig manga. I think you could call this "blitzkreig game". bk contests are contests of potential to achieve, so it isn't that different than what we do for human day.

2. Instead of ho-humming about the fact that it is a "heroist thingy", could you at least provide some introspective into what I think about game design? Or was I not clear enough about that?

Please allow me to elaborate:

Usually, Christmas is most enjoyed by people with a lot of money. This is because the aforementioned people have the ability to purchase worthy gifts and give them to their loved ones. However, some people do not have this purchasing power, yet still wish to give something to the ones they care about, so instead of buying something nice, they make something. This is what Human Day is about.

Also, even with the traditional approach to Christmas, it takes the power of the human potential anyways to be able to manufacture and sell those gifts that the wealthy will be buying. Aside from that, there is also the organization and planning of Christmas events: Family gatherings, dinners, formal Christmas pageants...these are all thought up and worked hard on by persons with a will to achieve something. You could also count the hours that people spend on decorating their homes. Much time is put in to making their decors aesthetically pleasing and befitting to the season.

Everything comes from the drive to out-do, which is the aspect of this particular season that Human Day is a celebration of. When it isn't christmas, the concept that spawned Human Day is still at work, as we are constantly trying to out-achieve one another, and contests like "bkfiction" are going on at least every six months. The only thing that makes Human Day so special is the fact that it is Christmas, and no one's ever figured out what that really means, either. So think of Human Day as the constant everyday struggle to "keep up with the Joneses", or more accurately, "keep the Joneses below you," but with a horrid Christmasy twist.

Tilde and the mask of Raspberry! was the perfect example of what human day is about. It is a game that strives to be better than yours, and uses figureheads that are found in Christmas tradition. Such as Santa Claus.

DISCLAIMER: I do not consider myself a heroist, nor do I desire to become one. However, I do understand where the heroists are coming from and what they are trying to achieve. I also know that they are seriously being misunderstood, and I am trying as someone who understands the concept, to try and speak for them. As Rinku said, people are taking them to mean the exact opposite, which is rather silly.

hmm, my interpretation is quite different...

First off, when one hears translations, we think of language, makes sense.

Laguages are means of communicating information, which can take almost any from, including computer coded language.

hence my entry:

My intepretation is that one ought to make an 'online' game, where players get to constuct battle 'programs' using a special language, and that the language was so flawless even an experienced coder could not compose a 'perfect' battle program, albeit the two groups mentioned.
So in short, on must constuct a giant paper-sissors-stones kind of language where no-one has a definite chance of victory.

Of course plotscripting a 'language', is an immense task in itself. But then again I've had the idea well before the human day... but I guess it's not cheating because I haven't even started yet! Really confused

Hoo hoo hoo.... Oookay...

Me thinks me screwed up un petit peu.
Sorry planethunter! I am scripting the language, but there is no way i can script a program that can read it, and respond. Well, maybe I can, if i can get the damn script working. Shall pm it to you.

Okay, now that I understand, I rest with my old latter statement....

"From this, one can gather that the theme is basically about communication skills. Good communication skills are seen as good, and the lack thereof is seen as evil."

not at all. communication and translation are two very different things. with communication, both participants speak the same language. with translation, you are going from one language to another.

('language' of course is broader than human languages like french, english, etc., but also includes codes, media, etc. for example, making a game out of a movie is in a sense a translation, as is making a game go from one console to another)

yeah, pm me whatever you got... I'm sure we can come up with something. btw, I also had another thought, in order to make the language as balanced as possible (i.e. less flaws and exploitations) it may help to keep it as basic as possible, so a simplistic tactic is preferrable like the game paper-sissors-stones, where assessing all the combinations would prove easier. (If you haven't got a clue what I'm talking about read my earlier post)
