Before I look at any post I look at the user who posted it. More importantly I look at their avator. Without even reading one word of their post you can tell a lot about the person by their avator.

A couple of examples may be in order (not real examples of course)

>disclaimer: I do not study psychology or art at my current level of studies. Therefore it is neccessary to warn you that the following will probably be complete tripe<

Usually a person who changes their avator often is eager to be accepted and a little insecure. Most of the time they're convincing others that they are more productive than they really are. Usually newbies who haven't found their place yet.

Avators that are merely screenshots from anime obviously are catagoristic of people who like anime. The character depicted could mean any of four things (or all of them)
The character is the closest they could find to their own personality
The character is the closest they could find to the person they aspire to be
The character is one they just plain like (simple & common)
The character is a woman so that they can draw attention to their posts

Avators that are a photo of the actual user usually mean that the user has a disregard for how others think of them. They speak the truth more often and like to literally say what's on their minds, offensive or not.

People with professional looking original avators are most often the kind of people who are actually popular in the community and thus should be treated with some kind of respect (Except anyone from RPGspot. They're the exception to this rule Ha ha ha! ). Because their avators usually lack the individuality of lesser users, it's often difficult to tell exactly what the person is like (Until you read the post of course)
<end tripe>

I believe that avators are important.
But the important question is do you? Or do you believe that avators are just the output for our creative slurry? Please discuss.

Ooohhh... secret prject... O_o...

Ok... why are you making me look bad? Thats not very nice. You seem to be very philosophical with this whole thing... You are making an issue out fo nothing. Peoples avators are mearly what they think is cool. All that other stuff on how you can tell how a person lives and does everything, I have to disagree on.

LOL about us "RPGspOt" people... Ha ha ha! I dont know why I laugh... but it just seemed funny, even if i was the receiver of the dis.

Although, I disagree with you, I do like looking at peoples avators. They sometimes are a real good work of art and sometimes they make you laugh, and sometimes they are just darn right ugly and make you laugh because of it. Big grin

LONG LIVE AVATORS

It's spelled "avatar."
And mine is a ninja kirby, because 1) Kirby is awesome and 2) ninjas are awesome. Thus, my avatar is doubly awesome.

Important?! Do you dare defy the Egg!? The Egg will consume your Anima the moment you touch it, the Egg cannot die, and the Egg will form itself into many things before reverting to its true self (not to mention obliterate you with its unstoppable Xenocide). Also Meythia, but only because I couldn't get her out of the screenshot. Oh well. Any case, this is only the second avatar I've had, only because I'm too lazy to draw up a Velduanga revision.

Or just indecisive. I used to change my avatar about once every three weeks until I settled on this one in late March. It wasn't because I wanted acceptance or I was insecure, it's just that I kept finding something better, and thought the current one was getting a little old.

Well, seeing how he's making generalizations and lacks perception in general, I'd say "nothing".

My avatar is Zero for a few obvious reasons. 1. He's red (Red- 2. He was once a Maverick (-Maverick-) and 3. He's Zero (-Zero.) Hince my screen name. I think avatars are neat because in some ways they can portray a person the way they want to be. Because if all of our avatars looked like us, then there would be nothing left for the imagination would there?

i keep looking at the thread title and reading it as "aviators"... er... anyway...

avatars are important (points to the avatar contest as proof), especially for those of us who are largely visually oriented. i don't know about most people (but i suspect this applies to almost everyone), but as for me, i change my avatar when i get bored of the current one. i think there might be a parallel between how often someone comes to cp, and the frequency of which they change their avatar... because they see their own avatar more frequently and get bored of it sooner.

except for the last two (which were so2's claude and a thai lion, respectively), my avatars are normally gryphons. i like gryphons. my online persona is gryphon.
