If you're going to do hand spriting, MSpaint actually isn't all that bad. It's quick to use, though obviously doesn't come loaded with features like GIMP or Kodak or Photoshop (or any of the rest) |

Deluxepaint IIe : here or here.
Grafx2: http://www.eclipse-game.com/?dat=7
Graphics Gale: http://www.tempest-j.com/gale/e/
i unreservedly recommend Deluxepaint IIe; it's the best program I've ever used for spriting or any paletted graphics.
orchard-lafayette ought to be using it
this is an opportunity to mention this, which is the collection of pixeling tutorial or software links on Pixelation. |

I did try DP2 a while ago... it crashed my computer. I don't know why, the screen just went blank and I can do nothing but reset the computer.

in the CGing area there is also Pixia:
http://park18.wakwak.com/~pixia/
Komera: is that intended to be ironic? i can't tell. it does seem pretty good for digital painting, if you're prepared to work around the fact that saving is disabled in the demo version, or buy the full version. i appreciated feature that randomly perturbs the hue/saturation of the color you paint with, since i've had to do that manually previously.
i like Pixia's notion of 'density' and 'thickness' better than Dogwaffle's conventional 'opacity' model -- it produces much more interesting texture that looks less computery. |
