I came up with an idea the other day which I thought would be useful for future 48hr contests (note that I personally am not proposing one here). See, every time someone has one, there's always someone else with a time conflict. If you could choose when to start, you'd be much more likely to enter (supposing 48hr contests are your cup of tea).

So, here's how you'd do it: You, the host, make a file for each entrant, who pre-declares his willingness to participate and the time he would like to start. At that time, you e-mail the file to the entrant, along with the theme or whatever, who has to upload same file in, at most, 48 hours. (Anyone who's done something like this knows how to mark the files per contestant.) Of course, a deadline for the maximum start date would have to be enforced.

The host himself wouldn't be able to enter like this, but everyone else would be much more able.

I think thats a great idea! If that be the case, I'm glad I'm not the host. It could get seriously confusing for them.

However, it would be easy to determine the theme from the games that are released. Many authors would even say what the theme was in the readme. Maybe they should be emailed to the host instead?

I think it's a good idea however.

While I like how it helps people out with schedule problems, one thing I really liked about the 48 hour contest is knowing that 10+ people are working on their game at the exact same time you are. It kind of gets me motivated.

Another idea is for the person organizing the contest to give a list of possible dates for the contest, and have people respond with the dates that they could make. Then you can just decide based on which one had no conflicts or the least.

Or, you could just not try to please everyone, and run your contest. If scheduling conflicts arise - too bad. There's plenty of contests. I don't think anyone will die over not having been able to compete in the 48hr contest.

Or...you could realize that a contest is nothing without contestents, and there's no real reason to be stubborn about the date it takes place if it means a better turnout.

I don't think the last 48 hour contest had a problem with turnout..

That is a good idea, but it would me slightly more work (and I'm pretty lazy with the contest as it is Oookay... ). Which is why I usually announce contests much ahead of time, making pretty much enough time for people who want to make space in their schedule for it.

I might try it for the next contest, see how it turns out, and maybe use it again.

Thats a good idea. I think it shall help alot, it was an issue for me in the last contest... I only got like 12 hours at most on the comp and never gave in the entry as it wasnt in playing condition...

If anyone needs help in hosting the contest, I'll gladly offer a hand.
