Post any resources you felt were helpful here and state what they are and why they are helpful.
List of Console RPG Cliches; it's helpful because after reading it you can try to avoid a few.

Rinku's LJ; he has some great game design entries. Although - you'll have to dig for them.

Chris Crawford's website. There's like, over ten years of his writings on this page. Read them.

ha, i'm listed twice here. and in the first two entries, too.
anyway, i don't have the links for most of these, but if you were really interested in them you could just search for them on google. these are the resources i use that have not yet been mentioned above:
game articles: basically only two worth of the name: 1) gamasutra -- you need to register to view most of the articles, but it's free and worth it. highest average quality of articles on game design i know of, except for crawford's site mentioned above. and 2) gamedev.net -- both the articles section and the messageboard. there's a lot of garbage to weed through, though, but by sheer size this one's the best.
independent games: dexterity.com -- both the articles section and the messageboard. by far this is the best messageboard for the independent game developer, especially on the business aspects of it. there's also www.indiegamer.com, garage games, etc., but they can all be found if you read the messageboard of dexterity.com.
organizations: asp-shareware.org -- association of shareware professionals. even if you don't intend to sell shareware, it's useful. there's also igda.org.
blogs: ludology is probably the best. there's also the livejournal gamedevelopers community, ernest adam's personal blog, and many others. usually they are a waste of time to read, but sometimes not.
reviews: gamespy.com -- one of the best review sites. another good review site is workingdesigns.com (i'm not kidding). there are a bunch of other good review sites too -- gamecritics, etc. reviews are less useful than most people think, so even these are kind of a waste of time.
game downloads: the-underdogs -- best collection of downloadable games anywhere, and the only place to find most of the rarest games in the world. spend at least a year of your life getting to know the games on this site (and even if you played the games here 12 hours a day for 365 days, you'd only touch the surface of the games on this site).
game information: gamefaqs.com -- a very very important resource for the game designer, highly underrated. i'd daresay the most important site for the game desiger. it's very important that when you are making a game you know all about other games that work similarly or are in the same genre. for example, to help me make giant turtle i downloaded and read all the faqs on koei games, especially the ones i haven't played. _________________ Tower Defense Game |

Ha, I thought I was the only one who used gamefaqs here. It's very important; not just for the FAQs. The reviews, which are horrible for the most part, are a great look in on your future audience. (Anyone can write a review) |

I find GameFAQs to be useful as well, just make sure you avoid the forums like the plague. _________________

"Realize that if you want to make games and complete them, it's not just about creativity, but also responsibility."
This is an old article about adventure game development, but it has some great general advice too.

Sierra wrote King's Quest. Re-read the article. Tierra remade it. _________________
