Yeah, Fyre, I know that there's some limited meaning behind all of those names (and I considered adding Final Fantasy to the list after I posted it), but it remains that they're still generic names. Take two cool-sounding words and slap 'em together. I used "Sword of Jade" as the first OHR example that popped into my head; good to hear that it isn't just a throwaway.
A much better title would be one that describes the gameplay or theme of the game. For example, while Seiken Densetsu (literally, "Quest for the Holy Sword") fits into that general category, it basically describes what the game's about: the quest for the Sword of Mana. "Grand Theft Auto" is a game about exactly that. Ditto "Dance Dance Revolution," "Street Fighter," and many others. RPGs tend to fall into the generic name trap far more often than other genres. _________________

Yeah, so does my work, but I take it to a level of abstraction where it doesn't look off. Veld's work is the "realistic" end of cartoony, so having Dr. Light-designed style bodyframes doesn't quite work.
My advice, and this is to all artists depicting human beings, is to study, study, study the human figure. Learn the proportions, master the concepts of the human form, and then you can abstract it successfully.
Of course, given the tone of this thread and forum in general, you don't have to take my advice, because apparently one artist telling another how he can improve himself is "mean". _________________ ARRRR, GLADYS! CHALK IT, DON'T PLEASURE IT |

... Nice. Certainly better than mine (Not saying much...).
As has been stated before, the best one is easily the Unbeliever.
I take issue, however, with many of the names. They strike me as... SUPA GENERIC! Not so much the names themselves, but the titles..
It bugs me.
Just curious, Moogle, can you name any non-OHR RPGs that aren't in the cool-but-pointless category?
Oh, and just to ask, is this in that category: Baselines, Book II: Duplicity. I thought out the title, and it DOES mean something, I'm just curious if it sounds as thought it doesn't.
... Ever write a post, then re-read it and realize it is, by and large, pointless? _________________ "I do believe your Squid exists. I really do, you know?" |

Nope. The titles sound pretty weird. _________________ Locked

I suppose I make my arms a tad too short, but eh. I'm not going to make any spoilers for it, but the name Vicious Infinity does make sense to the game. As for the character titles, theyre basically the characters' short phrase description/role. As for Agion, decide for yourself, the answer I give you wouldn't make so much sense anyway XP. _________________ If you hit a plane with the soccer, could you afford to fix it? - Shaolin Soccer

I was trying, Junair, I really was... but "Seiken Densetsu" was the only one that came to mind immediately. "Brave Fencer Musashi"? "Star Ocean" (still a stretch)? "Chrono Trigger" -- maybe?
It's really bad that I can't think of any commercial RPGs with good titles.
Anyway, sorry to take this off track. This topic would make a good thread in "Game Design Discussion." _________________

For some reason, not being able to think of any makes me happy. OHR has some nice ones though: Wandering Hamster, for example, totally makes sense. _________________ "I do believe your Squid exists. I really do, you know?" |

Guys please! New topic on that? I'd like to keep this on my art or dispute about art critique. _________________ If you hit a plane with the soccer, could you afford to fix it? - Shaolin Soccer

This critiqing issue is complicated. One the one hand, saying that you have to be better than someone at drawing to give them advice is like saying that you have to be the president to bitch about politics. On the other hand, I'd place a lot more value on the artistic advice of someone who drew this:
Than someone who drew this:
