What Jack meant by that comment was that the Elder Scrolls Games give the player so many choices that it's amazing (or crazy, which I think gave this agrument a catalyst.) Maybe it's that you and Jack have to different definitions of 'crazy'. I'm not sure, really, but that's what it seems by your post after his.

Wouldn't this still be violence? While it may not be physical violence, it is mental violence. Of course, those anti-violence in video game people probably would be happy with a game like this (that is until some little boy comes up and trash talks them to death.)

In all reality, the only non-violent games that have existed are the educational games, and Roller Coaster Tycoon. (There's probably a few more, but all I can think of now allude to violence. That's brings up another question, but I guess that's for another day.)

If anyone can come up with a good non-violent RPG, I would love to see it. It would be very interesting.

And some linear hack and slash games are fun, in my opinion.

Every game ever has had some violence. Even Animal Crossing.

That's not true.

Sheep Rancher. The only way you could say there was violence is that Sam loses a few HP when he steps on thorns. Also, Seekrit Rancher Cloud has a sword he never uses.

Solitaire. Unless you get mad and beat up your computer, but that's your fault.

Tetris. Ditto.

And hundreds more.

Solitaire has lots of violence. Innocent civilians and royalty are forced into segregated groups and locked up, never to be seen again. And the various versions of tetris have different levels of violence For example, the Gameboy version has a bunch of little people dying before the mighty flames of a space shuttle, and some versions have terrible deadly explosions, etc. And don't even let me get to horrible childrens games such as "Ring Around The Rosie" and "London Bridge," which are both chock-full of horrendous death. Really, if you think about it, every game has, and requires, violence.

Firstly, look, at the short, short, short version of a story. There's Act 1, an introduction to the characters and problems, there's Act 2, the conflict itself, and act 3, The Resolution of the conflict.

There's no way to make a game without the conflict. There has to be a goal, and there has to be at least the illusion of a way of achieving the goal. However, the conflict does not have to be violent. For instance, a game could be about the eating of dinner. (Or if you REALLY want to be non-violence, the eating of a salad). The player would simply go about the tasks related to eating salad, and upon eating his salad, he would get dessert. Or, the goal could be something like a race: Get from point A to point B faster than anyone else. That's competitive, but not violent. Moogle brings up a good game, Tetris, in which the goal is to make lines out of randomly shaped falling blocks. When you make a line, it vanishes, and thus doesn't stack up, until it hits the ceiling and you lose.

However, this discussion is about a non-violent RPG, and that becomes trickier. We probably ought to define RPG. However, I feel that a good rpg could be made with only puzzles, and talking. For instance, a character falls down a well, (Landing on pillows of course). He finds himself deep in an ancient dungeon, with various puzzles he must figure out to get out of the place. There's several prisoners in cells, who will offer him advice, and tell him what they remember of how they were brought here, to help him find the solutions necessary to get him to the top floor, get the keys, and let his helpers out. So yes, it is possible.

Complementing Gizmog's post I'd just like to say that everything needs a problem, this problem could be refered to as violence. I mean who would want to read/play/watch a game/book/movie without a problem? A problem is the driving force, as the story moves towards solving it. There are many RPGs and they all contain problems, were just used to seeing the swords and magics. Others have more subtle forms of violence, like money troubles or things like that.

(Harvest Moon --- you killed fish and ate them raw What?!?! )
