I wouldn't consider slap stick humor violence. If the heroes sabotaged the villain's chair, so that when he sat down, the chair fell out, and his rear end got stuck in the frame, I'd consider that slapstick humor, and not violence. But I'm positive someone'll come along and disagree. |

*honk honk*
(translation: I agree with Giz. Someone sabotaging the villain's chair, causing him to fall onto a frame and getting his ass framed would be great.) _________________ Planning Project Blood Summons, an MMORPG which will incinerate all of the others with it's sheer brilliance...

So it would be a simple practical joke, right? Then it won't be violence. _________________ All activity has been moved to Polarsoft |

I think a non-violent RPG is very possible.
But, of course, this depends on how you define RPG. Many people defines it as a game where you rise experienc and gain levels, but I would define games like Myst and Riven as RPGs. (The OHR "City of Dreams" too). Those games contains no violence at all.
I think battles are mostly annoying when you play RPGs. _________________ "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools."

Myst and its sequels are defined as adventure games, not RPGs. City of Dreams is an adventure game focused on exploration. |

This pretty much cancels out about half of your comments. Slapstick is still violence. _________________ "Everyone has 200,000 bad drawings in them, the sooner you get them out the better."

Then what is the official defenition of an RPG?
Is it a game where you gather experience and gain levels? Is, for example Diablo an RPG? _________________ "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools."

RPG: Role-Playing Game.
Technically any game where you play as someone else, though it is a little more defined than that.
dictionary.com wrote: | A game in which players assume the roles of characters and act out fantastical adventures, the outcomes of which are partially determined by chance, as by the roll of dice. |
also, Wikipedia has a detailed explaination _________________ "Everyone has 200,000 bad drawings in them, the sooner you get them out the better."

Slapstick doesn't HAVE to be violence! Look, slapstick is merely physical comedy, usually resulting in someone falling down. For instance, let's suppose the villain is charging at our clever heroes with a battle axe. If our heroes cover the floor with oil, or ice or something, and step aside, making the lumbering oaf of a villain slip and slide right beyond them, and into a mysterious hole in the wall, there has been NO violence, yet Slapstick has been achieved in his sliding, and later we could have the villain return, and IMPLY violence, by having his shirt tattered, and him mention crocodiles. However, you don't have to do that. By the same logic as the other comment, trapping the boss in something foolish isn't violence. Getting a bucket stuck on his foot, for instance. Or trapping his foot in the toilet, thus keeping him held still while our clever heroes march further forward. |
