I competed in peotry competitions quite a few years ago. Partly because of cash prizes, partly because the school planted my face all over town before I agreed to compete. Unfortunatly, the judges accepted a lot of poems such as this to be 'complete' peoms, saying that peotic structure was not neccessary. Fortunatly they won squat. In my opinion, Peotry does have to have structure and meaning, meaning being it may tell a story, make a statement, whatever. Here's a challenge for you, try writing an Australian bush ballad. If I remember correctly, the structure was 8686 where lines 1 and 3 rhyme, as well as lines 2 and 4. it also should have a minimum of 4 verses. that should keep you busy for a while. |
