And so, with all the contests finally calming down.. it's time I bring my own into the ring. I've been plotting this for a while, and after much thought and rethinking of the rules, have decided to give it a go.

Directions:
-Create a realistic area using the OHR being as detailed as you can be (more explained below).
-The area can be real or fake.
-Be as artistic as you can be.
-Bonuses can be included to earn an extra vote. (explained below)
-All entries must be OHR compatible, sorry.
-Make sure you include a name within your OHR file.
-You can create as many entries as you like, but only 1 can make it into the top 3.
-All entries must be original work. No using other's art, and please, don't re-use stuff from your own games either.
-All entries must be PG-13. I will allow blood, but please, don't include sexual organs.
-All entries must be in by August 5th, 2005 to in_cursive42@yahoo.com . I will collect all entries, and then post them up on the gamelist myself (for some reason I find it irritating and a bit rude to have a bunch of contest meant games splayed about the gamelist).
-At the end of the two weeks, the community will vote (pm me) for the top 3 contestants. Then I will pick which of the 3's work I liked the best.
-The winner will recieve five dollars ($5) US money.
-To recieve the five dollars ($5) you'll have to be a living resident of the US, sorry. Pehaps I can think up another prize for those who don't live within the US.

Bonus: 1 extra vote
- Include a walkabout that moves about the environment accordingly. He/she must be able to climb ladders/ropes, flip switches, pull/push objects etc etc.

The 'More' re-thought out: This is just some stuff people should consider to make their entry a bit better.
-Drawing a small one colored square, does not count as a book. Try and make the object look real. Include small littles things that you would normally see on these objects.
-Depending upon the area, what would you see outside. At any airport, no doubt you would see the runway and planes taking off.
-If there are TV's or radios within this area, make sure to give them some life. TV's show pictures and make sounds, and radios play music. But remember to give all objects this kind of life.
-Make sure to include NPC's as well, so long as the area calls for it.
-Sound, and lighting are no longer required. Although they may help, it is not necessary.

Please, use this thread for asking questions about the contest. You may also use it to throw around your own ideas. But please, do as the av says.

Remember: BE CREATIVE. The area can be from absolutely ANYWHERE. A TV show, a video game, a famous landmark or even your own room.

I have an area I'm currently working on for a game. So far, thats all I have. In short, its a big hotel. I think I'll enter.

I'm Australian. And what's that about being a living resident? Who here is dead?

No one.. that I've caught yet. They'll crack sooner or later.. [/stupidity]

I'm not really sure why I put that.. but I'm pretty sure I've read it somewhere in a set of contest rules.

I was really looking forward to this contest until you made it about realism. Making an area and putting a lot of detail into it sounds fun to me, but that it has to be realistic drains much of the fun out of it. I may or may not enter, I'm not sure yet.

Does making it realistic include using a realistic graphical style? Or does it just have to be a realistic kind of place with realistic things in it?

Also, given the insanity that sometimes happens with contest rules, you may want to clarify exactly what PG-13 means.

Also it makes no sense that people who take someone else's idea and use it instead of thinking of their own get an extra point.

Realistic in an artistic sense, I believe, with lots of detail. Doesn't mean there can't be style, it just means it can't be Katamari Damacy (if I understand correctly).

Just make a place that is detailed as possible. Make the objects identifiable, while still being proportionate. Try to give the area as much life as possible by putting in as much stuff that seems like it would fit into that area (but don't go overboard by making the area too crowded to move about).

Example: Your game Locked would work perfectly in this contest.. just without the searching part.

Well, as I'm letting people do any area they want to, it could lead from a stripjoint to a whorehouse.. not that I recommend anything of the sort. I'd really rather not have to explore a whorehouse in detail.

Good point.. I guess I just wasn't very creative with the bonuses. Perhaps I'll limit it to just the walkabout one, because it also seems a bit unfair to give 3 extra votes.

I don't see how the searching aspect makes Locked ineligible for the contest. I do see how being released already makes it ineligible, but that's different.

That doesn't make it ineligible, the searching part just doesn't need to be included is what I meant.

Cool. I'll probably enter then. When does it start, or has it started already?

I didn't see this before, but could you explain this? It's somewhat unclear.

Started yesterday, so you still have about 2 weeks to work on it.

When all of the entries are in people will vote for 3 people they think did a good job. The 3 people that get the most votes will be choosen as the top 3. Then I will look over these 3 people's work and decide who I think did the best.

If there aren't enough entries by the end of the contest, then I'll just let everyone vote for the number one.

Spiffalicious. I can work on this until the 48 hour contest, take two days for that, then finish this. HAHA! Razz

It's a solid plan...
Not making any promises, of course. ¬.¬

PS: Thanks for clearing some of that up...

Good thing I didn't make any promises. ¬.¬

Mine was going to be a sort of illustration of what it was like to work at "Sonic Drive thru", but I only have a third of the tiles done so far, and I have work tonight. We'll see how much I can get done in three hours, so I can send you a screen shot, or something. I think the theme was great.

Oh yeah. I was going to make an entry for this.

But then the 48 hour contest came around and exhausted me, and I haven't done any work on this one since then. Sorry about that.
