..i was reading a Febraury issue of game informer magazine, and i saw a review on The Legend of Zelda:The Minish Cap.In the article the author said the Zelda series was somewhat cliched all the time;so i became curious:what makes Zelda games successful when the story is always cliche?what elements are in this game that makes Zelda fans..uhm..Zelda fans? |

Of course it's cliched. It's the same story 90% of the time.
It's gameplay. LEARN GAME DESIGN _________________

Also, the idea that cliches are automatically bad is insane. Cliches can be good if they are used well, just like anything else. _________________ Locked

Zelda In General, and Minish Cap in particular have very fun gameplay. Originallity is important, but the mysterious and difficult-to-define attribute of "Fun" trumps everything else. |

Because each game brought in a new style to it, as well as a little revamped storyline. Not every game exactly has the same 'save Zelda, defeat Ganon' storyline, though. Majora's Mask, Link's Awakening, Oracle of Seasons/Ages, and the Minish Cap (?) all have their own side like story that all have their own gameplay style.
Speaking of the Legend of Zelda... has anyone ever laid hands on the computer games? I guess there were 1 or 2 of them where you played as Zelda.. saw it somewhere, but was too expensive at the time to check out. I wonder what they were like..
Also... I wonder why they never just stuck with 'The Adventures of Link blah blah', she's not even in some of them. _________________

I think part of this strange 'fun' aspect came from feeling like you were actually Link, going about and exploring some mythical land. The worlds seemed open enough that you felt free to explore, and yet just structured enough that you rarely felt like you were wandering about aimlessly. I am beginning to believe that having the main character NEVER TALK is also a fair part of the player being drawn in to becoming the explorer. I can't help but feel that there will be some who disagree with me though, and I am not sure exactly how I feel about the issue myself just yet. |

I too feel that Link's silence helps the player feel more connected with his character. Like they are almost part of him. It frees the player to think his/her own thoughts at moments when Link would usually respond, and to almost respond the way they feel is fit. Conversly, heros that have dialog are more linear and do not always allow the player to relate with them.
Come to think of it, there are times when Link would respond with a nod or some other body language that could almost qualify as dialog, right? Body language counts, doesn't it?
PS: Incidentally, I think this is how Pepsi wants the hero for the current Epic to be like. Not a bad idea at all. _________________ Planning Project Blood Summons, an MMORPG which will incinerate all of the others with it's sheer brilliance...
