|

I am having trouble making a tileset for a forested area. I can make single trees just fine, but I can't seem to make treetops tileable without making them look flat. Anyone with more experience in making forests have any suggestions on how to tile treetops in the OHR in a way that doesnt make them look like a leaf textured plateau with a trunk coming out of the bottom? Advice or good examples of forest tiles would be appreciated. |

I have this very problem myself, Citizen Kain. I can sometimes get around it but outlining a leafy (rough), round top and then filling the outline in with leaves. Of course it depends on the style of tree you're after. The trees on games like LOZ are just round and gradient and are easy to fill in.
But, like I said, make the outline of a plump, rounded tree top and then fill that in. You won't be so likely to go to the edge of the tile (bleed) this way.
Also, did you try looking at Sew's tree tutorial? make the stem and branches first and then add foliage around them. I suggest mixing that technique with the outline one too.
Later.
Oh yeah. Show us what you have right now.
That'll make the "after" shot all the more awesome. _________________ Planning Project Blood Summons, an MMORPG which will incinerate all of the others with it's sheer brilliance...

Sorry Leo, I didn't save any of my failed attempts to redo this to show you guys. X)
But I do have some of the old screenshots of the tileset I'm replacing here:
This paticular screen is a good example of what I was trying to do with tiled treetops.
I'm starting to realize something about all this though. Maybe the fact that I am trying to make tiled treetops is the flaw. Having one kind of leaf tile with 12 tiles to create edges just isn't going to make a nice round looking tree. I'm thinking I'm going to have to make one or two complete trees and some overlap tiles so I can create that illusion of being a dense forest. |

I agree with that. The forest map may have to be redesigned entirely to accomodate the small set of maptiles. I think that having the top layer of foliage tiled is exactly what is creating the illusion of a flat forest roof. |

The trunk is pretty uninteresting right now, too. For professional games with awesome tree graphics, try Final Fantasy 5 and Seiken Densetsu 2/3. _________________

Yeah, but that is the old tileset. I'm having little difficulty creating awesome looking trunks for my trees atm, its just the foliage thats got me down. None the less, I'll make sure to check those game's trees out before my next attempt.
Here's todays failed attempt. I wanted to make a nontile based tree that is very plain that I could still use to fill a forest with. Heres what I came up with.
What went right?
I like the perspective of the tree. It goes well with the perspective of the sprite. The leaves are shaded in a way that gives them detail yet doesn't make them blend in with the grass underneath too teribbly. The trunk looks decent too.
What went wrong?
The trees circular goodness looks like something out of a 16bit zelda game.
Filling an entire forest with trees like this would only worsen that effect.
I need to take a more realistic direction in my tree design, but I am worried about repetition if i make the tree too detailed. I'll try again and see how it turns out.
PS: I hate trees now. Too many leaves. |

Nonetheless, that's a sexy tree.

*shrug* Make up your own kind of tree! It's a fantasy game, after all. You don't have to make every tree an oak. _________________

Wanted to go for very ordinary here originally, but I'll consider it X)
lol @ my furry tree.
EDIT: Btw, Moogle1, I just checked out SD3's forest tiles. I just wanted to thank you. This is the best possible example you could have directed me to. They actually do use tiled treetops but in an unorthodox manner. I am going to thuroughly study how they pulled this off before continuing. Thanks again man. |

Great advice, but it wouldn't work in this case I'm afriad. As Kain said, it's important that these trees stay within the bounds of normality a bit. |

You know how important the look and feel of the game it. Each area has to have a unique and sometimes specific feel to it. That's not to say that your idea of unique looking trees if a bad idea. In fact, it may work extremely well in other areas. Just not this one. The idea, nontheless, is a good one. |

It must be a Fur...
What went right: It's definitely is rounder. You used your resources well.
What went wrong?: Hm. Is that a single tile, or 4 or more tiles? Single tile trees are more like bushes. So, like you said, filling a forest with a ton of these would look very strange. I liked your original idea of a canopy. Keep the single trees, though. They'll be a sort of monotony breaker for ya'. _________________ Planning Project Blood Summons, an MMORPG which will incinerate all of the others with it's sheer brilliance...
