Fenrir, you are obviously a big fan of North Mythology. Have you ever read my version of Thor's visit ot Utgard? I based it fairly faithfull on an actual Norse myth, one that I believe was included in the writings of Edda. (The only major deviation is that I totally forgot about the mead-horn-containing-the-whole-sea contest)

Anyway, my point is, while you are drawing norse monsters, don't forget the deaded Cat of Utgard ;)

Ah mythology. I went in the class not knowing wtf it was I came out with more info on greek, egyptian, norse and celtic mythology than I ever wanted to know...My brain feels fat. If the hero has to fight fen one of their names should be Odin.

James - I'm sure Moogle1 and I can come up with something that'll be fun. Also, Sven from wherever the Niffleheim he came from was a nice touch. Ha ha ha!

Battleblaze - True, but if you're named Odin, then you'll lose!

The original version of the myth that I read actually did feature some random mortal kid who hung out with Thor. He vagely remided me of that one nameless crewmember who always accompanies Kirk, Spock, and Bones on the away missions, and so I was completely surprised when the kid was not slain by Utgard-Loki or eated by Jormungander or anything like that. (I guess 6th century storytelling wasn't up to the demanding high standards of 1970's tv sci-fi). When I wrote my version, I couldn't remember his name, so I just randomly named him Sven. Some research now indicates that he was probably actually this guy

Ooh... and check this page out. http://www.hurstwic.org/history/articles/mythology/myths/text/thor_utgard.htm It has a pretty funny picture of Thor lifting the cat.

I knew of the other three, but I never heard of Elli before. That part is unfamiliar to me, thanks for enlightening me.

More spritey goodness. As of this moment, all non-plot-specific-enemies and bosses have been completed. After this we'll switch to the hero sprites, after an in depth conference with my colleges and cohorts.

A firey dragon, reclining and looking towards the heroes, as yet to be created.

The mythic flying boar of Freyr.

A towering giant of frost, weilding a mythic frostbrand. I especially like the white fur coat he has on.

Fire giants were pretty much the only beings that could actually stand up to the viking dieties. Can our heroes?

I decided to go with a more pot-bellied dragon for this one, choosing icy colorations for the scales and its more feathery wings. I like how this turned out too!

The Naglfar, Jotun airship of death, shown here rocketing towards the party with a swarm of missiles flying from it. Lots of missiles. There will be LOTS of missiles.

You KNOW what this is.

What?!?!

Man, gotta love it. Norse mythology is amazing, I especially became a fan of it after a little-known roguelike named ragnarok. Those were the days. Big grin

But Fenrir's sprites are just amazing.

Ragnarok! I loved that game! It is here: http://www.dosgames.com/g_rpg.php

I am probably the only person on earth who has drawn fan-art of the knilb enemy from that game :) (besides that render I also have a half a dozen drawings and a clay sculpture, but that one is the only one that is any good)

This is the nicest smelling batch yet. MMmmmmm. It's like someone's bakin' brownies.
The airship of death is gnarly.

Ragnarok inspired me to write a buggy (but working) roguelike OHR engine, and I started modelling my game quite alot on Ragnarok. Raspberry!

Hm, I'm tempted to dig that up again, especially after seeing that awesome render of the knilb. Raspberry!

But I am seriously looking forward to the hero sprites + walkabouts.

I'm crying on the inside. These are fantastic. Now just make the game match up to the graphics, eh?

ps this post's subject sounds familiar

Holy cow...these are great.

I'm certain you've been asked this before, Fenrir, but what artistic background do you consider these to have developed out of?
