I am a newb, I admit it. I'm only now downloading O.H.R.R.P.G.C.E. and I hope to do well. If you have any advice, it would be appreciated.

I'd suggest reading the HowTo, first. Should be able to find it on the same site you got the OHR from, but if not, go to www.hamsterrepublic.com, click OHR R.P.G. CE, and then click on HowTo when you get there. After that, just play around with it, and I think you'll catch on quick.

Excellent, an impressionable young one. Here are the true keys to success.

First, maintain your flawless spelling and grammar. I salute you for a proper first post!

Second, play a few games. You don't have to play a lot of them, but you should play a wide variety and you should play the best from whatever category of game you are trying to make. For example, if you want to make a game that will get a lot of downloads, try playing Final Fantasy H or Super Mario Bros.

Third, don't try to make a game that will get a lot of downloads. Super Mario Bros is my most shameful creation.

Fourth, learn that the time you spend here is time that you don't spend making your game. There are few places on this site that aren't a complete waste of time.

Last, keep making games. The first game you release will probably suck. Heck, no one here probably remembers my first three OHR games. If you don't give up at it, I can almost guarantee you will "do well" by whatever standard of doing well you hold yourself to.

As a side note, do check out Giz's links and watch who you take advice from.

5) please avoid RPG cliches` .

6)Get your friends to playtest the game.

7)Read a graphic tutorial (I'm not sure where the ones that work are anymore since "so you want to be a pixel artist" shutdown).

8)If your not having fun with game, don't release it. Reviewers will show you no mecry.

When it comes to graphics, I suck at them, but try your best. Everything in the (probably famous already) Cair Navon series is self made. Right down to the music. This is my first real game and it's a doozy. What I'm saying is get an idea you like, flesh it out on paper, and PWN the software used completely. See my Journal for my updated graphics. Gotta make my bro a cuppa tea, then continue working on it. Oh and don't set release dates until you have found an artistic style you like and stuck with it. Mine is minimal and dismal colour for a desolate effect. Bye! Oh and BTW, the first game should arrive in November.

Don't set a release date until you START (and hopefully 75% through) and are sure that you can get it out.

Chris I know u love ur game but this really is the wrong place for advertisement.

Didn't mean to advertise sorry, I was hoping to give him examples of my own artistic style, to help him develop his own. Didn't mean for it to come across as advertising, really. Embarrassed

Don't try to make a masterpiece out of your first game. It probably isn't going to happen. A lot of newcomers think their first game is going to be something really special, but they don't have the experience to make a really great game.

Do what you're good at. If you're good with pixel art, do lots of it. Show it off on the forums. If you're a musician, write music for your games. Show it off. Etc, etc. Get people interested in your work. Get them to give you criticism, good or bad.

Don't worry about aesthetics with your first game. Play around with the engine first, learning how things work. I advise learning some plotscripting as early as possible if you plan on sticking with the OHR for a while. Don't try to make a 2D sidescroller or anything, but learn how to make characters move around, swap out heros, and things like that. If you've never done any programming before, hamsterspeak is (believe it or not) a really, really good language to start with (A lot of things are already coded for you, so you have a safety net).

Ask for help whenever you need it (but do try to figure things out on your own first. Believe in yourself!)

In general, the better a poster's spelling and grammar, the more valid his opinion.

Wiser words have not been spoken in quite a while.

My advice:

Take things one step at a time. If you start working at the begining, you'll have a much higher chance of success (where success is defined by completing the game)

On the other hand, do a bit of planning first. If you don't know where your plot is going, it will be that much more difficult. But, again, don't plan everything to the last detail! Just make a rough guide as to the sequence of events, and you'll be fine.

I remember back when I was a newbie. I didn't even dare to make an "I'm New" thread, so I didn't get any warm welcome from the community. But, hell, this place already feels like home. Hope you won't get tired of OHR and keep on posting here for some questions you'd like to ask..

Although I would suggest clicking on the Search button at the top of this page. You can search for old topics so that you wouldn't have to ask questions that have been asked a long time ago..

Are you good at graphics? A composer? Or a story-writer?
Maybe you can show us a bit of what you can do so we'll know what we can think of you as...

Fungo the pixel artist? Fungo the composer? Fungo the writer?

And also..... you can use Smileys anytime!!!! Ha ha ha! Big grin Idea Razz Rolling Eyes

...but Leroy told me that they're for kids.... so I kinda stopped using them.

Nonsense! They are an essential part of the written english language.

Many ancient written languages only included letters for the consonants. vowels had to be guessed from context. This was no problem for readers who were already familiar with the text, but later generations had great difficulty precisely translating ancient writings. just check your history books (or wikipedia) and read about translation of the Torah or the Qur'an.

all modern languages use vowels, so that important information is not lost when words are written down.

A hundred years from now, if you read a textbook (learning-file?) about english, you will see a whole chapter on emoticons. They will be given equal placement along with punctuation. Emoticons provide essential information about a writer's facial expression and body language that can totally change the meaning of written words. Without smileys, information is lost.

Really? Then let's make it official. Welcome to the community, Leonhart!

I may have said something like that, but I think it was more like don't abuse emoticons. Maybe someone could get away with two per post. Try to keep emoticons organized. They begin to get unbareable after three or four.

Also, welcome to the community Fungo. Kick back, take it easy, and see what you can learn.

Oh no, I just had a horrible thought: What if in the future, "lol", "omg" and the like are integrated into the language completely? That would be scary, lol.
