Have any of you noticed that almost every RPG ever made only uses harmtiles that do 1 point of damage? Why is that? If an average person has about 10 HP, shouldn't lava do something more like 20? Should I make statements rather than asking questions?
Anyway, I know there are a few exceptions like the Barrier Floor in Dragon Warrior 1, but why are they so rare?

FF1, I'm pretty sure. But most deal more damage (FF4, FF5). _________________

I think most of DW games feature 1 damage harm times (in addition to the nastier ones). That said, I don't think harm tiles add anything to the game. With the lava, you're absolutely right when you say it should be deadly, which is why you should make it impossible to walk on, as opposed to instant death or ludicrously little damage.
As far as harm tiles that do a little damage, they're an annoyance anyway. You just walk over them and cast heal on everyone. There's no strategy, just irritation. Just forget them entirely. |

I don't know, I think there's something to be said for them. You can take the fast easy way, and cast heal, or you can try to find the most effective path through the lava. I think Lava tiles should be able to kill you, instead of most of them just lowering you to 1 hp, but they definitely shouldn't kill you the second you step on them. If you're going to do that, you'd might as well just add a wall.
Couldn't a pretty decent multilevel dungeon be made where a character at first level could barely cross the lava at all, and only by getting stronger could he endure the lava and go deeper into the dungeon? It'd be almost a natural level system, would encourage backtracking and exploration, and could feasibly allow sequence breaking. |
