(I'm starting a new thread, because that other one is for links to tutorials, and I don't think this exactly fits. If a mod thinks it important, they could even move those posts over here, for neatness sake)
Where you should start with Ice, as with anything, is to decide exactly what kind of ice you want. There's a pretty big difference between, say, the polished smooth sheen of a hockey arena, a frozen lake, and the kind of snowy Antartic type ice. You're also probably going to want to do some snow.
Play around with the paler and brighter shades of blue, and white. You might start by filling the tile with white, and then adding in blue to make cracks in the ice. Touch it up with a little bit of kind of pale sky blue, and you could have a pretty good tile.
I don't want to exactly draw anything, or make a big long tutorial, because I'm tired and I've got a game I need to work on, but there's a number of OHR Games that take place in the winter. Why don't you look at Tilde and The Mask Of , or my Santa Goes Extreme to give you something to think about while you make yours.
If you do look at existing tiles, be sure not to trace them. Look at them for awhile, and then take a walk or something just to get yourself loosened up, and sit down and draw at it for awhile. Sure, it won't be exactly the same, and you'll probably have forgotten some details, but the most important parts should stick with you, and if you tinker with it a little bit, you'll figure out why and how exactly it works.
And actually, if you know how to make water tiles, you could probably make the edges a bit rougher and sharper on that, make the palette much paler and whiter, and add some diagonal hashmarks to get a decent tile. |
