Hello,

http://www.castleparadox.com/songlist-display.php?song=188

Please listen and comment. I would appreciate comments on how it could be more distressing or unsettling.

Ew... You certainly got your point here. "Unsettling" is not unsettling enough. That music is like someone stuck a drill into my ear.

A murder to my ears...

The tritone hasn't over dominated the piece too much. The very, very low pedals were almost too 1930s horror for me, but it's the first in a series of short pieces I'm working on at the moment. What ideas should I approach next?

Oh, and I would also appreciate non-musicians giving their input alot. Thanks.

This is a nice little tune here, it really hits the mood very well.

The only comments I have are this:

I think the first instrument you have (is that a timpani) isn't really the best choice. It sounds really strained in that register and at least for me detracts from the mood a little.

I think the opening should be a bit more pianissimo, so that there's a real contrast in the the blasts of sound afterward.

How about a sense of dictated sound in the section with the blast? The first one really startled me, but then after the second one, I could count when the next one was coming.

Well, what exactly were you wanting to pull off with this piece? Depending on the horror style you were aiming at would give better grounds for advice in the direction it could best go in.

I don't think I'm heading in any direction espeically, I just want to be able to write very unsettling themes, without resorting to direct dissonance. In this example, I wanted very much to be Avante-Guard, like something shocking from the 20s. The next piece I'm writing now has more connisance.

Well, in that respect, I would say you did rather well.

Here is the second piece of music. Very different. I wrote this in front of a piano in about 10mins.

Comments are always appreciated.

(Edited by Setu: I changed the link because the old link took people into the "Edit Song" mode. Here they can just download it. Wink )

This is a really good approach, Jabber. Now what this piece needs is some more instruments. It can't rest with just that piano part. Build on top of it.
