I'm not much of a composer, I know. In fact this one may come across as rather short, even simplistic. Still, this is my first shot at any kind of writing music on my own (aside from transcribing directly from pre-existing sheet music). I was somewhat hoping for a villain's theme.

This is great! It definitely sounds like a hero-doubting-himself-theme/villain-theme type of song.

Short and simplistic, yes, but not bad. I think of it as more of an anticipatory villain's theme -- the music played while the villain is discussing evil acts rather than committing them. Such a theme demands simplicity and this fits the bill.

i say either what moogle1 said, or when the heroes discovers something mysteriously tragic, something that doesnt make sense in the steam of discoveries they've been making.... if that made any sense at all.

Well, if you're normally no composer, than this may just be some bit of a niche for you. This was pretty well done for someone who's never attempted composition before.
