I'm using Finale Notepad to compose music, and too late I realize that it only saves to *.mus format. Can anyone direct me to a program that will convert it to MIDI format?

http://drsleep.newdoom.com/sound.shtml has a utility for MUS to MID conversion-- but I strongly suspect it will not help you. The MUS format saved by Finale Notepad almost certainly is not the same as the MUS format used by Doom.

Apparently, MUS is a proprietary format used only by Finale Notepad, not not supported by any other program. The format us further complicated by the fact that they seem to keep changing it, so each version of Finale Notepad uses a different type of MUS file.

If you want to export MIDI files, you will need to upgrade to the $50 non-free version.

Your only other option is to get a loopback cable, plug one end into your speaker port, and plug the other end into your microphone (or line-in) port. Playback your music in Finale Notepad while recoding with window's sound recorder (or any other program that can record) and then you will end up with a WAV file of your music. You cannot convert WAV to MIDI, but you can encode it as MP3 (or OGG) so that other people can listen to it without having Finale installed.

I've never used Finale, although it is in my Music & Computers classroom. I'm honestly surprised that there is a music production program that doesn't save as MIDI. I was under the impression all of them did these days.
