I have an idea for a battle system for my game "Test of Normality."
Basically, there are different 'species' of magic people, and they have different powers. (Energy people have high attack power, low magic, and are very physial. Divinity people have migh magic but low defense, etc)
I was thinking, instead of having different equipment for the slots, I would have 1 slot for a weapon attachment, and 3 slots for an 'energy stone' level. The weapon attachment would add a unique power to the caster (Such as "never miss" or "100 percent counter rate")
The stones would be named specifically for each 'species' and the level of power they hold, such as LEVEL 1 ENERGY STONE or LEVEL 2 DIVINITY STONE. Everyone can equip the stones, but by equiping the same stone that corresponds to the same species, you can augment the already good aspects of that character, or by equiping another a different specied stone to a character, you can level out the character's stats. A level one stone would have little effect on stats, and level 3 would have a great affect.
I am concerned that this system, while unique, would not be good to use, as it would take away the ability to equip helmets, or differant weapons, etc. What do you guys think? I have already started the system.
Thanks for reading this. |

I've thought a little about this, and I think that I am confused. If everyone can equip all the stones, why don't they just equip all of them (one in each slot)? Or if there is only one of each stone, can't they all just be equippable in one slot, thus saving room for other equipment?
Aside from my possible misunderstandings, the system does not seem bad from an 'equipment' point of view. In fact, it may be much easier to balance, because the player now has no simple way to alter their characters' defense (or so it seems from what you've said so far). There's nothing wrong with that, as long as these stones have noticeable effects on other things (which you seem to indicate they will). _________________ My first completed OHR game, Tales of the New World:

Whatever system you create, you are going to balance enemies around it anyway. I really like the system, and you can simply lower enemy attack to make up for the sudden lack of defense, or even go as far as to make defense growth higher than it normally is in other games, and have a stone to add an actual 'bonus' to your defense, rather than requiring armor to be the basis of your defense like most games.
If you want an example of a game that didn't have armor and relied on a special system to boost stats: Final Fantasy VIII. Your system is probably far more feasable to work with than the Junction System, though, heh. |

I remember the Junction system in FF8. I tried junctioning 100 Ultimas to my attack, but the damage never went higher than 9999. Boo!
Anywho, it would be cool to make a variety of different stones, like a "Fire Stone" that gives you strength to fire-elemental attacks but weakness to water-element attacks, or a "Focus Stone" that cuts MP use in half, or a "Regeneration Stone" that automatically gives you "regen" when you enter battle. (I know, that hasn't been implemented in the OHR yet, and it might never be, but a man can dream, dammit!) Basically, make tons of interesting and unique stones. |

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. The weapon stone gives those "obvious" benefits, like "fire absorb", and the other level stones give things like 10 points to magic, magic defence and reflex, for example.
Thanks for your oppinions, guys. |

im pretty sure useing the bitsite absorb fire isnt a very good idea unless its a veeeery high level stone or else the results might not be very pleasing. _________________
