lol it felt as though this was aimed at my game submission XD XD XD
And yes, it would'nt be a parody indeed... but the typical rpgs have been parodied in the past several times (quest for the 32 crystals hahahaha) so I think Xolnar would serve a more noble purpose Raspberry!
and a room with encounter rate set to 100% would just piss people off... its like playing Lufia I and using that gross water thingy where you get 1 enemy every square for some time... worse item ever, even for leveling up!!

It wouldn't tick them off if you made the battles easy enough.

It doesn't have to be 100%. Just 75%. As soon as you finish up, you crack open a can of poking fun at Xenogears' encounter rate.

Perhaps I need to explain more, since many of you have said things like "I don't want to do stuff for some new kid who has no clue what he's doing!!!"
See, I'm not looking for minions, slaves, henchmen, or whatever else you thought I was looking for. This is how I was planning on having it work- I kinda work on the game and maybe say something like "wow, my graphics for X are bad, does someone want to make it look better?" However, not even that would happen very often. Most of the time it would be more like someone else saying "your game needs X. I'm going to add it." I wasn't even planning on being "in charge" much at all.

Also, as far as the story goes (sorry if this is/was confusing, I'm bad at explaining things), what I meant was that I think I'm good at coming up with really cool stories, and I know I'm at least good at coming up with fairly decent ones, but I don't know how you'll react to them. When I said I was awesome at coming up with stories, I meant that I could come up with many good, lengthy, and original stories, but when I said that didn't mean it was "amazing" I meant just that. I said I was awesome at coming up with stories, not that I came up with awesome stories--
Quote:
It seems that you think that you believe that your stories are incredible from your first post. Since you are "awesome at coming up with storylines," that obviously means that they are good ones

Yes, they are good. But good and amazing are two entirely different things.
Anyhow, since very few of you have expressed interest in hearing my story, and those who have seem to just want to make fun of it when It's done, I'm going to put a hold on that until someone proves the preceding assumptions wrong.

Anyway, since some of you seem to hate me for no apparent reason, and others want to see something I've done, I guess I'll try to start a different game that will be shortish, so I can at least show those of you in the second category what I can do (I plan on ignoring those in the first entirely)...

ok pal, here's my 2 cents. Make the game, do draft wherever you can't fill the gaps. When you've got something standing, put it on the game last, announce it over here and specify that if anyone is willing to help revamp it, you'd be interestd. If I see fit, I might do some music for you then if I feel its worth it and could do with something better than it already has. Sounds fair?

Don't take it personally (especially since no one here knows you well enough to hate you personally). A lot of people have made your offer in the past, though, with no takers. The reason for this is that even though you say you won't be the one in charge, it's still your game you're asking for help with. It's going to be impossible for you to convince people to help without giving them a little bait.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and try to soften some of the comments of others with a couple generalizations. I hope that I do not grossly misrepresent anyone, but if I do they are more than welcome to shoot down anything I say here.

I do not believe that anyone who has posted in this thread hates PurpleSquerkle. But at the same time, I'm pretty sure that no one here is ever interested in doing collaborative games with people they don't know, especially if they have nothing to judge the person by. This is for a lot of reasons. First of all, most of us who have the free time to be working on games are already working on games (or at least, I hope). Second, most of the people who have been a part of the community for a fair amount of time have seen way too many people come on board making claims about being good at X or Y, but then their first game (if they even make it) turns out to be, well, amateurish, even in the X or Y department. Remember, the veterans have been here for years. Lots of them. They've seen a lot in terms of the OHR.

I guess I'm typing this because I occasionally get discouraged when I see new-comers getting discouraged by what they perceive as very negative comments. But as a new-comer, you HAVE to show the community something. Even if its not a full game, if you think you have a good story, we have a story forum. If you think you're good at pixel art or music, we have forums for these things as well. If you think you're good at plotscripting, or battle balance, or any small thing, make a small demo game to show what it is that you're talking about, rather than just talking about it.

PS: I just want to make sure that no one thinks that this post is supposed to be specifically aimed at him or her. Its not, its just something of a rant from someone who hangs around, but hasn't typed his mind concerning the community itself very often.

Must you apologize after every post? Seriously, it's okay to express your opinions here.Unless they're stupid opinions.

But yep. I'd say you summarized everything perfectly.

If it helps, we WILL help give advice on graphics and other tidbits of your game if you post asking for advice. It is not the same as collaborating on a game, but it is VERY helpful and will easily benefit you in the long run.

Anyway... I don't mind that you say that you can make a good story. Just make sure you actually show us in your game that you can back up what you say. Saying that you have an actual strength is a lot better than saying "I don't have a story or gameplay idea yet, but my game will be awesome!" (*coughAutoTcough*)

Heck. I actually shown some graphics but refuse to say that my game will be any good because I still haven't put together a good solid ground for a story (and my gameplay ideas will need testing and tweaking, obviously.)

But the point is, most people have the wrong idea about group project. Yes group project are sometimes very good, but they don't get assembled when one guy randomly pops up in a chatforum sayin g"let's make a team game". As much as I'm concerned, most team games ive worked on were people from my msn list, or people I've playtested games from.
I think msw is very right when he says the two followings: we won't work with someone we don't know, or have no idea of the potential skill and dedication of (or experience). We all need to judge the person on a personnal level before venturing into that or even giving a damn.
If I asked Newbie to work on my game with me, he'd say no, I'm sure of that. If I told him I'm sorta lazy these days, showed him some of my work and said "I've seen some of your game previews, I might have a couple songs to replace the ones you've got..." He might say yes after hearing them. And THEN, Newbie and I would have a relationshi[ + 5 boost and he MIGHT consider giving help on that other project I've had in mind with whatever proeficiency he has... That's how it works in my book. Too many people start project without a reputation, and they need other people to help them on different fields. If you know you have skills, and you know you need other people to help you out with your own projects (note by the way, some people get along alone very well), then by all means, get a fame beforehand so that people know you're serious and that their contribution will serve a purpose!

That said Purple, that was nothing personnal, and as I've expressed earlier, show me work, and I'll see what I can do. If you want people to help on YOUR project, then show us what that project is beforehand (with as much as you can do on your own). If you want to work with other people on A project, I suggest your propose someone with help, or join a collaboration game that's initiated by a person with more fame than you, henceforth building your own fame.

I just think people don't like to have the impression of being slaves off a classified ads forums, they're humans, with a limited supply in time, and they're not willing to participate in ANY kind of game at all. We all have interests.

Once again purple, show us that story, show us a demo with whatever you can do (even if its crappy). Most people have a good eye for potential over here, and if it does have potential, people will, at worse, pat your shoulder gently, or come up and help you. If it sucks, I'll honestly tell you, but also WHY and HOW to improve it, so that you can come up with a design that people might be more interested in joining.

But more importantly, I don't think any new OHR member can really hope to hop a team before making a one-man game. That's like... a rite of passage XD

No, you didn't "scare me away..."

Anyway, I'm off (Okay, so you still might not see much of me for a while. I'm pretty sure it's to your benefit...) to start working on a game, thank you for all of your advice.

Also... Purple is an adjective. Squerkle is a noun (a creature from "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator," a book which you have likely never heard of. Sequel to "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," if that helps...). So it seems to me that if you're going to abbreviate it, squerkle would work better... meh.

Purple Squerkle is an awesome name. Never shorten it ever again. EVER.

Actually... You aren't a n00b that gave us a lot of problems like people such as Chaotix did. Any new member that doesn't have to be smacked around is a welcome addition in my book, so if you need help drawing a character, making maptiles, doing plotscripting, balancing out battles, etc... We'll be here to help.
