If you are thinking of actually trying to design a contest, well, it hasn't worked too well recently. Money is always a good prize, but even that didn't get people motivated a little while ago.

A possibility that occurs to me would be a guaranteed OHR Bookclub thread. I think that a lot of people might like to discuss their game with others, and it would also mean that they would want their game to be as good as possible, if it was going to be debated over. Just a spur of the moment idea, I haven't thought about this too much yet.

My main motivation for a few of my contest entries was just some sort of recognition. But that doesn't fuel my spirit too long. That's when the inspiration of winning material goods comes in.

"If I do well, then I'll win something that I can touch!"

the bookclub thread is good...
Money isn't my forte, not 'cause I'm not ready to spend, but I think a prize is good when its "something". I'd rather give a big mac than the money to buy it. It MAY not be as enjoyable, but a lot of people try not to spend too much money, so when you give them a prize, its like you force them to buy something in a way...

As far as worthy entries come, that depends entirely on the submissions, its nothing the host could ever do a damn about...
I asked the question because:
a) I had a vague idea of a contest with theme and such
b) I had NO idea how to get people to participate at all... And clearly, I still don't... Wish I could give people one more year to live XD

I'd like to earn a $50 (USD) check from Fenrir-Lunaris in an OHR Contest.

The main thing I get from any kind of game contest is a new game by me.

What I want is some set of rules and constraints that inspire me to have a go.

Sure, I have only written one OHR game, for my own contest, but I have also taken part in two Retro Remakes competitions and a couple of mini-compos, and an LD48.

It doesn't even really need to be a contest, just something inspirational and with some kind of deadline. Otherwise I tend to just sit around having ideas. ;-)

Being in the UK, most physical prizes would be quite troublesome and expensive to deliver, but if I had to have something, I think a real trophy would be nice.

What I would want...

Is for people to play the game... Not just CP, but actual casual gamers who doesn't know this site exists. All they have to be is a Final Fantasy fan to appreciate a good OHR game (I managed to get somebody addicted to Vikings of Midgard).

Food for though... what if the contest itself was to embody both a development duty and a playing duty?
Lemme explain, making a game is a very classical contest. Playing through other games isn't. Now, without falling into a rally for whose gonna beat the most game in a given time, there is surely a way to get members to play and make...

Part of why I keep quoting the Magnus sequel marathon is because it is the only contest reference I have from the OHR community, but, to a certain extent, the design seemed particularly original for a contest (the way it was meant as a whole formed with miniseries episodes from every members). The sad part, in a way, was that it seemed to end once the games were done and submitted. Of course, you wanted to see what the others had done, but you wouldn't get points for it.
Think about this, and tell me if its worth anything:

Contest:
- Make a game (deadline)
- Beat all games (deadline) (savegames can be shown as proofs, assuming all games even allow first hero renamed and you are told to rename it to yourself... there are still ways to cheat, like passing it on to your friend or little brother, but I really don't see the point in that).
- Then some sort of weekly discussion about each of the game.
- Then, votes + bonus points (beating games) declares winners.

I know beating games points are easy to earn, and potentially, everyone would have them, but the thing is that, because, if you DON'T, you get penalized, it FORCES people to play every entry and beat it. It's like putting a candy at the end of good, average and crappy games (the first, you'd beat anyway, the second, you might not have downloaded otherwise, and the third, you'd never typically beat).

Of course, that is purely rhetoric so far. Anyone who likes the concept is free to use it. I think it IS a form of reward.
Now correct me if I'm wrong, I may not be from the same social background/culture/etc etc etc... but earning money from an OHR game, even if up to 50$, isn't going to get me started on a game. The whole idea of being on a contest, according to me, is already worth more than 50$

Definatly.

You did? I reviewed the game until it got canceled by the server who thought I was a hacker... This game has SERIOUS balance issues. Don't get me wrong, I like the elegance of the design (simple, straightforwards), I LOVE the graphics, the music is fitting, but its mainly battles over battles, and after 5 fights, I was invincible with one hero. I beat all bosses with 2 attacks only. I stopped halfway through the ice dungeon because I was overbored with the repetition Sad... Seriously, I suggest you get these monsters tougher and add a couple goodies on the playability side: you'd get one of the best ohr games ever Wink
But the point regarding that outsiders play your game is definatly interesting. Now on to HOW to implement this into a contest formula might be a little tricky... Perhaps by arranging a pan-contest between different communities? (Some using OHRRPGCE, others rpgmaker, etc) Still, it would only get played by makers, but that's already a larger audience I believe...

Several people see deadlines as a motive to finish games. Not all people work this way. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm not sure people such as Rinku produce more games in contests than outside of them. In fact, some people consider a hasty release to ruin the idea, and feel they can kick their asses into making the game anyway (even if it should taken 50 years lol), so its not to be dismissed either, but since we're talking deadline we're obviously expecting quality screwups... :::

!!!unless the contest was actually not about starting a new game, but starting from an OPEN ohr file that each person is given 3 weeks to study, and edit it in order to make it better. I think that's a VERY interesting theme. It's not about construction, its about "repair" or "improving". I have no example of what good open ohr game could be used, but I'm almost certain that some good ohr game makers could be convinced in opening one of their files for the exercise, though, of course, we should rather use a game that's CLEARLY flawed (though not crappy). Some game with a good underlying design but a faulty development?

This latter idea seems like it yields a lot of potential. Comments??
