|
|
This is a concern I have because I plan on getting a new laptop, but I do not want to get it and end up finding out that it will not execute Custom on that computer. What I have had problems with other people's computers is that when you try to load Custom, it acts like it's about to load but nothing happens. They have XP just as I do but for some reason it doesn't load on theirs. I don't know if this concern has been brought up before, but if any of the programmers know the cause of this it would be great to know (Game still executes, but nothing happens when you try to load Custom). Thanks. _________________ http://www.castleparadox.com/gamelist-display.php?game=750 Bloodlust Demo 1.00

The Windows Custom.exe works on my computer (with Windows XP)--though I'm using Hasta la QB+ rather than any of the nightly versions; it might be some problem with one of the newer versions that makes XP freak out sometimes.
Or it could be (and probably is) more of a problem with the way XP is set up on some computers, or something like that... new versions of Windows always seem to cause problems with programs that didn't start out on Windows (and sometimes even ones that did.) |

I've only ever had that problem on the DOS version, and it was because some files were missing from my configuration. There might've been a page on the wiki about it, I'll see if I can't look.
EDIT:
Here it is.
It's worth noting it was my parent's computer, and they're horrible at this sort of thing. It's likely your friends are, too.
Now, sometimes I'd get the message, sometimes it would just flash the DOS screen, but all in all, I'm pretty sure it's the same deal. |

Custom doesn't run at all? On SEVERAL computers? (Which version of custom was this?) I don't think anyone has ever reported that under Windows, only game or custom sometimes hanging while loading or quiting. Any details about the computers? _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |

Not so much. One of them is a relatively old PC but it is from at least when Windows XP came around. The other is what seems to be a brand new (or relatively new) laptop. I don't know any specific specs on them, and this is the latest nightlies, or just any custom in general it seems. Last last week was when I tried the latest nightly of custom on the laptop, and many months ago was whatever nightly was out, as well as hasta la qb+ on the older computer. Neither worked.
When I double click it, the mouse icon changes to the little busy icon for a moment as if it is about to load and then ends up not loading at all, if that is of any help. Game runs just fine, but custom fails to load at all. _________________ http://www.castleparadox.com/gamelist-display.php?game=750 Bloodlust Demo 1.00

The problem has to be the computers, not custom itself. I've never ever had that issue with a computer with custom or game and i've went through several in my time here.
Any computer you buy with a clean OS install should run it just fine i'd imagine. _________________ MOCBJ Software - My Games

Try again with today's nightly build. Mike fixed a bug the other day that sounds potentially similar

Well, hey. Eager and impatient to take advantage of some new features (namely sound effects and npcs walking in place (any chance we can get that for heros, too?)), I just downloaded the latest nightly and ran into the same problem. Hasta-La-QB+ has been working just fine for me so far, and still is, as well as the nightly GAME.EXE, but CUSTOM's giving me nothing. |

Please try some alternate backends. go to http://HamsterRepublic.com/ohrrpgce/nightly/ and try each different backend. Let us know which ones work, and which ones do not work.
Also, it would be helpful to know where you installed the OHR. A notable difference between GAME and CUSTOM is that GAME stores temporary files in the TEMP folder, but CUSTOM stores temporary files in the same folder as the program. |

Oh, look.

It works fine, now.
EDIT: I've checked it, and there's the same problem with all the backends, too. |

Oh, wow. I guess we ought to do something about that!
Perhaps displaying a user-visible error message, rather than just writing the error to an obscure file that nobody is likely to notice :)
EDIT: Actually, I just fixed it so that both ohrrpgce.fnt and ohrrpgce.mas are optional. It loads sane defaults when they are missing. |
