I am about to pull the trigger on Tiera Software's Bug Tracking Software "Defect Manager" It is 100 bucks, and I like it, but I want to make sure that there isn't an alternative before I spend the money.

Basically, I use this program to keep track of bugs in my game. I don't use it for anything else. It basically saves me from writing on 100 sticky notes and losing or forgetting different bugs I need to work on.

Any suggestions?

Get a playtester to record all of the bugs that it finds? Neutral

Seriously, no bug-recording software should be worth that much, unless it can actually find the bugs in your game (Does it?).
Besides, it says that you can get it for free if you're in a group with fewer than five people (aren't you?)

Why not just have a .txt file or some such that lists all the bugs? That seems like it'd do the same thing at zero cost, and you'd have it all in one place so no worries about losing anything.

I just re-read your post. It sounds like all you're using it for is to keep a record of bugs you found manually. For that, I would suggest just using Bugzilla (you might be able to run a Bugzilla database without actually hosting it on the internet.) Or just a plain old text editing program or note taking application.

Yeah, I guess you guys are right. I occasionally THINK that I need to spend money on something that really is unneccesary...lol.

Thanks for talking me out of it Happy

EDIT: I did try Bugzilla in the beginning, but couldn't ever figure out how to get it to work...so don't know if it would work for my use or not.

if bugzilla is too hard, there are still a ton of other Free Open Source bug tracking systems.

I would start here: http://sourceforge.net/search/?type_of_search=soft&words=bug+tracking

Thanks for the info. I tried a few out an decided that an excel spreadsheet would probably work just fine for what I wanted software to do.
