I recently ported to FreeBasic an old unfinished prototype of a Bob the Hamster jump-and-run side scrolling game.

You can download the results here: bob-old-sidescroller.zip

You can move Bob around a single level, and interact with a few objects, although there are no enemies to fight.

This code is notable in OHRRPGCE history because, as best as I can remember, it is the first Hamster Republic code to use the multi-directional scrolling code used for the OHR's maps.

I find it interesting that Baby Bob actually plays a little smoother than this :)

Oh, neat! I like how everything bounces around and you can run on top of cabbages. These other files look like a map editor, a tile editor, a data editor, and a couple of programs for converting graphics. And.. some of this mapmaker code looks like it found it's way into CUSTOM.

Yep, mapsubs.bas in the OHR was originally a cut-and-paste job from mapmaker.bas from the Bob sidescroller.

The source code is at svn://gilgamesh.hamsterrepublic.com/hamster/direspam but I haven't ported it to FreeBasic yet.

Wow, I'm sure you've linked to these before, but I really need to take a proper look at all these projects! A few of these are unreleased games? Ah, I still have a copy of QB4.5!

I'm gonna say around late 1996 or early 1997. I know it was only a matter of months before I started the OHR

Yeah, some of those were never publicly released. Here is an overview of what is in the repository:

allmodex .... fork of the OHR's allmodex, for (somewhat) easy porting
bob2 .......... unreleased (until now) unfinished sidescroller. Written mainly by me.
bobquest .... First released on Games of The Hamster Republic CD. by me.
bobvga ...... Descended from the first-ever Bob game, BobVGA, (also on CD) written by Thorbrian
byter ......... crude but useful raw binary file editor, by me.
casino ........ unreleased and very cheezy, by Thorbrian, although I'm sure he will disavow it.
cow ............ unreleased Farm Sim game, written by Cartlemmy.
cowbobs ..... Released on GotHR CD. The OHR's sprite editor came from this. Written mainly by Thorbrian
direspam .... Released but unfinished, written mainly by me.
dos-install ... Used on the GotHR CD, written by me
egarpg ....... Released and finished but cheezy, written by me.
gungnir ...... Unreleased unfinished space shooter, some of the OHR's map code descended from here (by way of the bob2 sidescroller). Written mainly by Thorbrian.
ipxufo......... Released, basically useless due to death of IPX networking. Written mainly by me.
midi2bam ... You know, that old thing. Written mainly by Thorbrian.
misc .......... Nothin' to see here.
nesha ........ Released unfinished. I eventually want to make some features of this available to the OHR battle system, but would only use ideas, not this messy code. Written mainly by me.
notate ........ Still the only music composing program I have a clue how to use. Written mainly by me.
oldship ....... Unreleased but complete clone of an apparently famous game called Shipwars. Written by Thorbrian.
one-d ......... Released, finished, miniscule. Written mainly by Thorbrian.
piano ......... Stephanie's PC Piano, written by Thorbrian (top candidate for porting to do Midi work for OHR users)
scramble .... Bust-A-Move clone, finished, released, and pretty nifty. Written mostly by Thorbrian.
shipwars .... Unreleased, very unfinished upgrade of oldship. Mainly by Thorbrian.
sidewalk .... Released cheezy Street Fighter 2 parody, probably not worth porting, but worth fixing to no longer use hard-coded paths. Written mainly by Thorbrian
spit ........... Spitwars, released on GotHR CD, Written by me in under 48 hours, networking code added by Thorbrian later.
textgame ... Unreleased unfinished text-mode adventure, written by me
thresh ....... Unreleased unfinished but kinda nifty space-shooter, written by Cartlemmy.
trundle ...... Released on GotHR CD. Mostly by me.

Ah, yes. Spit was a great game. Hours of entertainment for me. Happy times.

(Sorry, doesn't really have much to add asside from the sentimental things)

My mom was addicted to Scramble for like 2 years. Her addiction persuaded me to learn that song ("Chuckling Chickens" or whatever from that collection that I forgot what it was called...NIght at the Exhibition or something) on the piano.
