Had to use low contrast shades for a lot of the face or he would end up looking very wrinkly. Light source straight straight in front.
Next time I'll have to try lower cheek bones.

I had no reference (so this is not a drawing of myself). I just drew a generic face shape and felt at my own face to and applied it to this, then drew a hair style that kept most of the face exposed.

I probably made a million errors, of course.

I think that is pretty darn good.

We ought to have a face pixeling contest :)

Thanks, but is there anything that could be done better that I didn't possibly think of in terms of facial structure and such?

This makes me call to mind the facial proportions section of my high school art class. And with that said I can safely say that UR DOIN IT RITE.

I mean, if you really need some criticism, I guess the eyes are just a smidge scary being that big. But seriously, that's it. Everything looks awesome.

WOW.

That's really good dude! I can barely pull off a human sprite, but you nailed a face. Good job!

His face seems a bit too... triangular, although this is coming from me assuming you're going for a realistic style. Something like this is probably fine for an anime, but it looks a bit unusual for someone's chin to curve in that much in real life.

Overall, though, it does look really good.

I'm going to try not to do this next time. I was waiting on someone to say this but I got praise instead, heh.

Thanks for the praise anyway. Just shows I'm on the right track and that I just need to shape it better.

If you wanted to go truly realistic here, you'd let some people have features that seemed unusual. Everybody's always trying to make their characters pretty and normal looking.

The goal for me is to learn to do it right, so that I can apply what I learned to make something unusual.

I made the mistake of learning to draw anime/manga style things first (and not very well), when manga is really both stylization and simplification of people and drawn in such a way so that they can define shape by relying on line strokes and cel shading.

Well, I assume the latter. Pixelation really had an effect on me.

Anyway, I am not going to draw another face until sometime in the future, since I want to work on my OHR game.

Hmmm... lets see. it is really good, so it is hard to find any points to criticise-- but if you want to improve it, maybe you could raise the contrast of the nose a little. If I squint,or view it from a distance, the nose is the first feature that vanishes. You might darken the smile lines, or define the what-do-you-call-that-thing-between-the-nostrils. However, in doing so, you risk making the face look older. Right now I would guess that this person is a young-to-middle teenager. If that was your intention, you are spot on.

Perhaps rather than fiddling with an already-very-good nose, you should try to draw a few more frames and animate a smile or some other facial expression.

I can't wait to see that face used as an enemy in a game.

Actually, James, I did edit it last night (before you made that criticism post), but I just now uploaded the edits. I decided to doctor the colors in Paint Shop Pro 8 since I screwed up this palette.

Full of highlights and contrast (hopefully the nose is better defined here, though it doesn't define the thing between the nostrils, just the nose itself. >_>)

Trying to convey similar information without using as many colors (I actually made this one first, then did the above, which is why some changes aren't present, and the nose will still vanish in this one.).
