Re button mashing: Anyone ever play Ogre Battle? There's a SRPG that mashes the buttons for you -- all you really worry about is troop deployment.

Ogre Battle is an interesting example, too, because it wants you to use your level 1 characters to beat up their level 5 characters. (Not level 30, though. That's pushing it.) Doing so will raise your characters' alignment. If you let your characters' alignment drop, your reputation karma meter will go down, too, preventing you from getting a good ending.

one mission could be "Prevent Enemy from Reaching X". Again, this could simply mean to defeat the enemy. But what if you weren't IN the position to simply defeat the enemy, IE lvl 1 vs lvl 30. The thought of defeating such a foe would seem unlikely. But depending on the abilities at hand, simply "stopping" an enemy without getting killed, or even noticed, would be a more realistic goal.

You could have obstacles that the hero can use to block the enemy, like fallen trees or giant stones, etc. I agree, that would make a very interesting mission. "Don't get caught" would probably be the secondary objective.

I can understand deviating from the norm, such as making most random battles complex, if you do that try to keep the encounter rate low enough so it won't be overly annoying since individual battles would be a drain alone.

I second this motion. Balancing complexity with quantity (Or quality with quantity, if you want) is a good fundamental in general.

Fire Emblem 3: Book 2 had a couple of chapters like this. Chapter 9 (I think it was) had a sub-boss standing at the corner of the map, but his stats were completely maxed, had the best spear in the game, and you needed the Light Orb to damage him, which you couldn't get at that point. You had to complete the objectives of the chapter before he began moving and chasing after your units, which would result in automatic death when he got close enough.

Another map created a bunch of reinforcements after a certain amount of time, meaning that any units left wandering around would get annihilated easily because they are promoted enemies. Basically, you had to get through the map quickly again.

FE3 Book 2 had only "capture the throne" objectives, but they made some interesting situations out of such a simple setup none of the less. Book 1 is an SNES remake of FE1 (that doesn't change much other than game mechanics), so Book 2 is naturally more interesting due to a more modern take on Chapter design.

Fast forward to Fire Emblem 7, you see several different kinds of objectives throughout the game, as well as fog of war, and even a magic barrier (prevents magic use inside of a particular area) in two chapters. You range from standard capture the thrones to killing all enemies to defending, and sometimes you had a limited number of days to do something.

I've played the original FE, The Sacred stones, and Path of Radiance. I have yet to finish any of them, though. Those bastard game designers make me have to back track five chapters to stop myself from wasting an item I desperately need in the second to last chapter. Pissed off!
They are great games, though. Each one offers something new.

Fire Emblem is my favorite game series. Though that's not really what I wanted to post about.

As odd as this may sound, TCGs (the majority of my time/money/life goes to them) are a lot of the source that I use for strategic game development. From TCGs I understand a lot more about resource management / short term vs. long term planning and related trade offs / the idea of "strictly better" and all sorts of other things that I think translate well into standard RPGs

Actually, I guess non-video games in general help a lot with this. There usually aren't incredible graphics or sound or storylines (especially with board games) and yet people still enjoy them immensely. It can't be all due to playing with one another.
