So my brother comes into work today and gives me a floppy disk that I apparently gave him over six years ago. It took several hours for me to finally be able to unzip the contents, and then I ran into errors trying to play the game.
My question is this: is the RPG file salvageable, or is it toast? I'll let YOU decide....

The floppy disk had bad sectors on the zip file, didn't it? And the reason it took you so long to open the zip file was because it was failing the CRC test, right?
At first glance, I thought it was a total loss. I did use it as a test case to do a little clean-up of the code that displays error messages when corrupt lumps are detected.
Then I remembered "lumpfix", which is a crude utility that I wrote a long time ago to repair an RPG file that had been transferred on a floppy with bad sectors. You can still find it at http://hamsterrepublic.com/dl/rpgfix.zip
Much to my surprise, your corruption happens to be exactly the right kind to be repaired by this tool. I tested it, and it did produce a playable RPG file. It appears that the only data that is permanently lost is the 7th tileset. You will see vertical lines of random pixels smeared all over it. |

Is there any way you can send me that file? That would be great, because I can't get RPGFIX to fix it on my end (it says that the font file is missing and immediately closes.
If you can, send it to m0nkeydung@comcast.net. That would be swell. |

rpgfix is worthless. The one you want is lumpfix, which is in the same zip file as rpgfix. |

Lumpfix doesn't work for me either in Vista. Doh! I'll try getting it to work on an XP machine and get back with you. |

Got it to work. Wow.....the memories! That was a reaaally early remake of The Omega that featured an excessive use of gradients and crudely copied FF5 sprites. Those were the days
I did enjoy seeing my old stab at isometric graphics. I might try that again for my next title and see if I can bring it further. |
