Sorry, this might sound very newbie. Well, I am new here, but I'm not new to forums, or the etiquette or whatever Raspberry! I'll stop yapping and get to my point xD

Do I have to convert my MIDI music files into BAM files in order for them to play in my friend's game, or is there some way to make the game play MIDI files that haven't been converted? See, my friend from another forum asked me to compose some music in MIDI files for his OHRRPGCE game but I read somewhere on the Hampster Republic wikipedia thing that you have to convert MIDIs into BAMs.

And then I dug around a bit more and I found an article that said that converting to BAMs changes the sounds of the instruments, and that for some reason BAM doesn't recognise volume settings in the different tracks, and that percussion doesn't convert well. I have a bad feeling this can quite easily disrupt the balance in my pieces, especially ones that rely on percussion, and I thought I should ask whether it was really necessary to convert or if that was just an option.

Thanks if you can answer my question, anyway ^^ You can listen to a couple of my tracks here: (I had to export them as MP3s to host them, there don't seem to be many MIDI hosts around)

http://boomp3.com/listen/c1qje2ixs_j/mage-dungeon (press download, the preview version is distorted and tinny)

We actually have a MIDI host implemented into the site. Check it out here!
As for your question, it used to be necessary to convert MIDIs into BAMs in order to use them in OHR, but when the program went Windows support was added for many other formats, .mid and .ogg being the standard.
Matter of fact, BAMs are apparently auto-coverted back to MIDI when imported into the engine.

More info's over at the wiki: 'Supported music formats'

Which page on the wiki made you believe that conversion to BAM was still required? I would like to fix it.

Actually, I had it wrong, I didn't find the article on the wiki, but it was an article that was on castle paradox: http://rinku.castleparadox.com/Septa/design_specmusic.html . Must've been outdated for a while, then.

Yeah, that article is about 6 years old. MIDI has been supported for nearly 3.

(BAMs are converted to MIDI when played. There's still a chance that some day they'll be played with a builtin synthesiser, like MAME does, or something else, instead)
