I am hardly a new guy. I have been following OHRRPGCE back when Wandering Hamster ended after defeating Lord Boaste with Lord Hasim or whatever his name is. Anyway I have been a silent observer of the community for probably about ten years now. I have used the engine to tinker with other people's projects and put together my own fanboy games. Of course I have never come close to completing anything. I think I had my Mario Brothers RPG up to a two minute demo. Fortunately that data was long ago deleted.
So I thought it was finally time to break my silence and enter the community. Do I need to get vaccinated first? Just kidding. Well a little bit about me, I'm 27, married for four years, and father of a two year-old girl. I have thought conversational English in China. I have cooked for 8,000. I was the captain of my high school the year we won the league championship. However, I don't know Chinese. I worked in my universities caftertia along with another 200 students (but we did served about 8,000 meals on Thanksgiving). My high school was part of small private league and it was flag football not tackle.
I have master plan for an epic game that I will probably never finish. If you have ever played the Treasures of Rudra, its storytelling will be kind of like that. If you haven't you should. ToR is a SNES RPG that never made it that USA but has since been translated. You could play it with an emulator. Anyway in ToR at the beginning of the game you select one of three characters and guide that through the events of the game. Your character will intersect with the other characters but each has an unique storyline and path. Eventually all the main characters work together to...well you can figure out. So my epic game will feature 12 main characters. Currently I am planning on approaching this way. First I am complying a massive source file that will have all the general graphics, maptiles, maps, item, attacks, and enemies. From that source file I will construct each character's storyline. I am planning on breaking them up into acts with each act begin a separate game file. I remember seeing a script somewhere that would let you transfer date from a save file of one game into another. So I think I will do something like that. So far I have some of my overworld maptiles and almost all of my hero sprites. I have converted all the hero sprites from Romancing Saga, Final Fantasy IV and V into OHRRPGCE format. That's lots of fun by the way, but easier for me that trying to draw my own sprites. You can't imagine the horror!
Holy crap this long! I would write more, but I think will just follow replies. |

This is the internet!
There's no need for so much backstory :p
However, welcome back to the community!

Horrorible or not, the community generally prefers original art (even if it's a little bad) with clear effort over nicely ripped graphics ;) |

Hi! Wow, ten years...
Actually, it's nice to have someone introduce themselves like you've done. Normally you have to lurk around livejournal or something to get even that amount of detail :)
You could try to modify the ripped sprites, by using them as a template, or even if you only draw a little over them. If players see sprites of characters they immediately recognise, they will be pretty annoyed.

Save file? I assume you mean RPG file. Yes, it's possible but you generally can't (with the exception of maps, and graphics if you use 'ohrgfx') selectively include only certain items, such as certain enemies in one game. I suppose you probably don't care about minimising filesize though? ohrgfx has been reported to have some problems with some new RPG files, but it would be possible to work around that. _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |

Wow, that is quite a lot of hero sprites! I would love to see them.
Although I bet with all that pixelling experience you could actually knock out a few good heroes in the same style easier than you think. |

The game is actually known as Rudra's Treasure rather than Treasure of Rudra (since the fan translation called it like that), so just say Rudra's Treasure or Rudora no Hihou.
And yeah that game is good, but it's more popular for its "You can enter any combination of characters and it will become a skill" feature. Like you can just enter "Ultima" and cast ultima with that. :-)
"Many main characters playing independently and eventually interacting with each other" is more a feature of the SaGa series if you ask me.
By the way, I love games that work like that. _________________ Snippy:

First, if you're gonna correct a guy, make sure you're right. The fan translation was called Treasure of the Rudras, but I've seen that and Rudra's Secret Treasure used. Either are acceptable.
And while the best part of the game was being able to make an attack called "GODDAMN" that used the word as its graphic and was actually useful, you can't hold it against a guy if he's more used to branching character plots from Rudras. Maybe he's not as exposed to SaGa. |

No I have played both Rudra and Saga. It will be similar to each. |

Don't plan the game too big because I want you to finish it. _________________ Snippy:

Well my plan is not to release one massive game, but to break up each characters story into acts which will each be a rpg file. The first acts will probably be somewhere from 1.5 to 2 hours long. They will all follow a similar pattern of a small task to introduce the main character and his/her fellows, then the main quest, and finish with an event that leads into the next act.
So if I follow my plan of complying my entire source file before I start any of the acts, then I should be able to roll them out in rather quick succesion. But then again this whole story has been rolling around in my head for the better part of fourteen years, so progress has been slow to say the least. |

But if you do it like that you'll probably quit after the first act and then there's no "multiple hero" feature in the end. :p
Good luck anyways. _________________ Snippy:

Practically speaking this project should be referred to as the "Games that will probably never be started and certainly never finished." But it is something constructive to day dream about. |

Wow! That is a heck of a lot of hero sprites!
Makes me want to play RS1 again. When I played through I didn't even encounter half of those characters. |

Quite a few original characters, and then the hero selection cuts into quite a few FF4 and 5 sprites. Were you planning to edit every single one? _________________

Actually I'm pretty sure that all the ones at the beginning are Romancing SaGa 1 sprites. Some of them definitely are, I don't know if all of them are. |
