VDMS sound? That's for DOS applications. All of the latest OHR versions are Windows.
If you do have windows, you may need to turn on your MIDI mixer in volume control. _________________

SW Synth is probably it, then. _________________

I"m not sure at this point. James might have a better answer. _________________

Some questions:
*What version of the OHR are you running?
*Are any of your volume mixers turned down or muted?
*Have you tested other games, or is this just happening with one game?
*Have you tested both GAME.EXE and the music import menu in CUSTOM.EXE?
*What about the sound effects import menu? |

-i am using the newest version of the OHR.
-none of my volume mixers are turned down or muted.
-i have tested both my game and vikings of midgard.
-i checked game.exe and the music import menu and neither had sound.
-the sound effects DO work.
any ideas of what it could be? _________________ insert myspace link here. |

A similar thing happened to me once or twice, although i initially thought it was an OHR-only problem.
The sound effects indeed worked but the midi tracks didn't. I tried playing the said midi tracks outside OHR (winamp and windows media player) and surprisingly they didn't work too, while other sound formats (mp3 and wav) are loud and clear. |

In older versions, I remember making sure that SW Synth was on before starting game.exe; however, it would occasionally turn itself off as I played.
This hasn't happened to me in quite a while.
Then again, I haven't been using Midis for quite a while. |

See if this helps. Download the following package:
http://www.castleparadox.com/fenart/timidity.rar
Then, unzip its contents into C:/timidity
Try this out and see if it corrects the issue with sound effects? |

Strange, seems like a number of people have broken Windows installations which can't play MIDI files. Who knew supporting MIDI would be so hard? _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |

That is fascinating. I guess SDL_Mixer can automatically fall back on timidity if the OS MIDI synth fails.
This sounds FAQworthy :) |

YES!! Blue text for you <3
I'm not sure what the actual cause is, but I somehow doubt it's a broken Midi synth or OS issue. I've had to reccomend the exact same thing for a good two dozen or so people on FA who report the exact same problem - so I have my doubts. I'd go so far as to recommend that a future "fully loaded" OHRRPGCE distribution have a timidity package with it to entirely bypass this issue of lacking Midi synth. Two dozen non-OHR community users is probably the tip of the iceberg here, is what I'm saying.
But yes, a FAQ. |
