Here's an older pre-beard picture. I had a summer job helping design a gamma ray detector for a particle physicist.

My detector was to be used in combination with ... that monster.
The monster is named BLOWFISH. Which stands for ... um ... forget.
Anyways, they were blasting lithium nuclei with gamma rays to try and learn more about the strong nuclear force.
Each of those pointy things is a detector which picks up neutrons after a nucleus is shattered.

That thing is oozing with cool.
