The Yo Ghost fad has been old since the game came out, honestly. I think it jumped the shark in that Hspeak article. I'm getting kind of sick of newbie game-bashing.

Unless of course, it's self-bashing. Here are some screens from my entry, a sequel to two of my newbie games drawn in the same style, which will be 100% Yo Ghost-free:

Maybe, but even I'm guilty of running the same joke too far in to the ground. I'm glad you guys still think Yo Ghost is funny. I guess.

Humor is subjective, Surlaw. Appeal in general is subjective. I'm tired of you jumping on my throat about displaying opinions every time I do it. My distaste for the Yo Ghost fad doesn't interfere with anyone else's, so what exactly has your panties in a knot here? Besides, even YOU have to admit it's ridiculous that Yo Ghost is showing up in so many games, like it or not. Why are we celebrating this game? Think hard about this.

Lay off. Seriously, man. You're one of the most openly opinionated people I know. The fact that you constantly berate other people for having them is idiotic and ironic, and sometimes it really makes it annoying trying to have a reasonable conversation with you.

/endrant

Shortened version:
Why is it OK to run this Yo Ghost thing in to the ground (i.e. make it a "meme") yet it is not OK for me to reference more popular memes in my work? Answer this. Honestly. You can't possibly have a reasonable justification that isn't just you being a jerk.

If you think this is a positive thing, let me ask you this:

Why are we encouraging the creator to keep making stuff like Yo Ghost instead of improving his work? Isn't that what this community (and Hamsterspeak for that matter) is about?

I know I'm not perfect, and I overreact to silly things like this sometimes, but in the big picture this is a really stupid thing to be getting all of this attention. Some cutesy references aren't a big deal to me, but everyone making a Yo Ghost game because that's the popular thing to do right now sort of does. Where's the creativity here?

Yeah, this is the RGC, I know. I should really lighten up. But hey, I didn't think it was funny in the first place. I have every right to continue thinking it's a stupid fad.

Community in-jokes among a group of what, 30 people, bother me less than repeating a joke that literally millions of people have made. As far as I know, we've got one article joking about Yo Ghost, one guy making a parody, and a few people referencing them in their games, just like they have with Plips, Yuks, whatever. Joking around with Fyroa when he posts about them doesn't really count.

You may believe this, but to the vast majority of human beings this is a really weird opinion to hold. More people are going to think a Bel-Air tirade is funnier than a Yo Ghost. When I make things I want to show other people, I want to hit more bases than a close-knit community. I am saying this because it is a lesson I've learned from the work I've made. You don't have to make any references at all; hell, it's probably better not to, but referential humor is enormously popular in comedy today. Sometimes a comedy writer just wants to go for a cheap laugh. Can you seriously blame him for picking a subject bigger than OHR Land humor?

Just to clarify: My game's a complete re-make of Yo-Ghost, and the hero is the same one as before.

I know Fyroa on a personal level, And I'm mostly transferring some of his unfinished ideas for Yo-Ghost into my game. And also, he has been working on it, and even improving it according to the reviews he got. But, unfortunately, he has very limited computer access, and the most recent copy of the game was lost a while back. It's very safe to assume that Yo Ghost is on hold for a very, very long time. ( But not aborted! )

And that said, Nobody's bashing him or his game. The only reason he got as much attention as he did, was because of all the "Hype" and attention that he built up for the game. I mean, he even posted stories for it.
The OHR community is very small and close-knit, and I'd say anything from our community does have a bigger impact on us than other far more culturally popular things do

Just had to say something.
Thank you. :)

Well, I just joined. (not JUST, but... eh, whatever...) I think the concept of Yo Ghost is hilarious, especially since many of my friends overuse the word 'yo'

I am way behind schedule on mine, but I will have at least some sort of demo to offer.

I am begging for some small assistance. I want to have a large collection of simple 1-color line-art pictures. Here are a few examples I have come up with so far:

If anybody is willing to draw and donate a couple of pictures in this style, I would greatly appreciate it.

* Use large enemy sprites 80x80
* color 0 should be black. color 1 should be white. The rest of the palette should be unused.
* They should mainly be positive images. Happy, joy, celebration! Other than that there is no theme.
* It doesn't matter if they are oriented right-or-left. They might be flipped though, so no text!
* E-mail them to me in bmp or png format to Bob@HamsterRepublic.com or send them to me in a PM

Anybody who sends me any of these will be credited (Definitely in the README by contest time, and in the in-game credits too, which I may or may not finish in time for the contest)

This is a little late, mostly because of my laziness... In fact, the background is still incomplete, but regardless...

BATTLE SCREEN:

Also,

And,

At the speed I'm going, there'll probably be only about ten minutes of gameplay.
Not extraordinary gameplay, either.

But this project'll certainly be carried on after the RGC, even if very slowly.

Yay, Yo Ghosts. ( CP Needs a Yo Ghost emoticon so I can express the Yo-Ghost inside, yo. )

@James: YoYOYo! (can't get over that...) Razz

In other news: discouragement is a terrible thing... chances are, my wonderful concept will not get anywhere near far enough to actually release. It was too big for this contest.

But, I'm still hoping to scrap something together in time for a reasonable game. (Wait... that made no sense...) It probably won't be related to the other game, but whatever. Huh?

Weeeeell, Yo Ghost most certainly is not coming along well. In fact, I'd say I've clocked in well under 24 Hrs working on it... and It shows.

It's too late for me to withdraw, I mean, I should definitely still give it a go, but I think It's best I at least warn you. Haha. Of course, the project's not cancelled or anything, I'll still work on it every now and again, beside my main project.

Also, Puckamon has me excited in all sorts of ways. >_>;;;
All of the entries look pretty fantastic, and the suspense of what may be behind James's demand for monochromatic line-art has me thrilled.

Thrilled.

Speaking of which, I really like the ones I have gotten so far, and I am hungry for more
