Is it possible to open an OHR pallette .bmp file in GIMP and say:
"Dear GIMP, make a GIMP pallette out of these colours OKTHXBYE" and then edit an OHR graphic using GIMP?
Le how? _________________ Working on rain and cloud formation |

Hmmm... yes, I have done this, but it is a bit of a pain.
Open the 24 bit BMP of the palette.
Go to Image->Mode->Indexed
Choose to "Generate optimum palette" with maximum number of colors 256
..... Uh.... dang....
Okay, at this point there was a way to save the current color map. I can even see some old OHR palette color maps that I had created previously, but the ability to create new ones seems to have mysteriously vanished in the current version. Colormaps were used mainly in the Image-Mode-Indexed screen to force a 24-bit image to use a specific 8-bit palette.
However, all is not lost. The palette bmp that you have reduced to 256 colors does indeed have an OHR colormap. Resize it to the size you need, clear it, and save it as a new filename. As long as you don't increase the color depth, the image will continue to use the OHR palette.
The color picker looks the same as it does when you are working with a 24-bit color image, but any color you select from it will be adjusted to match the closest color in the palette. |

You need a plug-in for this. I use this one. |

I tried installing that plug-in in my ~/.gimp-2.6/plug-ins/ folder, and i set it executable, but nothing new seems to show up. |

Hmm... that's the only plugin I have installed, so it has to be the one. I actually tried to test it out last night but couldn't get GIMP to open at all. I'll reinstall and try again when I get home. |

I know my plugins are working because I have the one to allow the Gimp to open ORA files from MyPaint installed, and it is working just fine. |

Ok, figured it out.
First: Apparently that "plug-in" is actually a "script" so it goes in Code: | Gimp-2.0\lib\gimp\(version)\scripts | sometimes this folder is hidden and sometimes you have to create it.
Now you can make a GIMP palette by using:
Colors > Map > Colormap to palette
(for indexed images)
OR
> Select > Save to palette
(for a selection)
To apply the new palette go to:
Image > Mode > Indexed...
Select "Use custom palette" then click on the little palette thumbnail thingy, and select the palette you just created.
EDIT:

MyPaint has become my primary graphics program, and I just open stuff in the Gimp now for post-processing.
I love MyPaint. I want to marry it. |

Paint.NET always the bridesmaid, never the bride!
Too bad it's locked to Windows for the time being. And the creator(s) pulled the source code off the net because too many fly by night companies were simply taking the source, changing the name and recompiling it with their own branding and selling it. That didn't piss him off though - it was that they all left the original creators website/email as the support contact instead of the company itself. |
