Just a friendly, but pointed and somewhat frantic reminder that we only have 20 days left to wrap things up. This would be a good time to script your demos' endings (whatever they could be) and spend the next three weeks completing and polishing what you already have.
To reiterate what JSH summed up nicely in his article:
http://superwalrusland.com/ohr/issue43/hohr/hotohr.html
Post what you have on November 30th. Live like we did back in the old days when demos were a thing to look forward to.
Also, if you want to enter your game, please remember to mention it and post a link to it in this thread, or to the sister thread on Slime Salad. I will be looking for entries starting on December 1st. If you don't post them here, I won't know they're entered, so post them here.
Also, if you think you'll be taking a six-month sabbatical from the OHR before the deadline, then you may want to post early (this is more for the people who expressed interest, but I haven't heard from since August).
For anyone who misses the deadline this year, I will probably host HotOHR 2 in two or three years, so prepare your games now.
Good luck and get to it. _________________ Progress Report:

Hey, I know it's short notice... things have been crazy-busy with work, exams, assignments, etc etc... I've been meaning to post my intent to enter the contest for a while now.
I suspect I'll have a fair amount of content available and I'll try my very best to get a release ready before or on the 30th.
As for the feature request; it's one I've brought up before:
A bitset for attacks - "Do not display weapon on attack", so all my gunslinging banditos can use dash in attacks without it looking like they're firing at point blank range.
-Thanks |

There's just no way I'll ever get enough of it done before December to justify coming out with a new demo, and I really don't want a demo of Chapter 6 to end with partially-completed maps of the final dungeon just sitting there and being mostly unexplorable.
The only "new" part that's complete enough to have 30+ minutes of gameplay time is the Chapter 4 secret area, which technically isn't "new" so much as "unreleased," since it's been done for months, I just haven't actually released a new demo with the area in it yet. |
The secret area may not be new to me, but it is new to most people who are playing the contest games, so I say it's better than nothing at all. I'd certainly accept it as an entry. The secret area alone has more content than I'd expect a handful of entries to have in their entirety.
Surlaw in another thread about the Village People wrote: | I'm unfortunately going to have to announce that this update isn't going to be done in time for the Heart contest. I really wanted to pull it off, but I've been busy for months and only now am I finding more free time. If by some act of God I get it done in time I'll release the Indian Chief update, but it's not looking likely. |
I'm seeing this pattern spread across quite a few games. I've also noticed that James is behind on his bugfixes still. And I also see by the calendar that time is almost up...
Obviously, I want this contest to work, and for it to work, it needs contestants. I also want a guarantee that some quality titles will emerge from this. But, I'd also like to start wrapping it up, as the deadline is fast approaching.
With everything beginning to rain down at once, I suppose now we can admit that we're in the decision hour (as, based on history, I figured we'd have to address eventually).
So, here's what we need to figure out:
Do I need to revert back to my infamous Deadline Extension PR form that first appeared in the Magnus Sequel Marathon? I don't really want to bring that guy back, but stories like these are steadily convincing me to let him make a two-week appearance.
Normally, if the story was about procrastination, then I would just keep to the schedule, and let the procrastinators live with the results. But I'm getting the feeling that many of you legitimately tried to make the November 30 deadline, but just had too much to do.
So...
Let's get a raise of hands. Who thinks he or she can make the deadline (bugfixes included)?
Who thinks a few extra days will make the difference?
Who knows that without the Sands of Time, there is no hope in making this contest?
Your votes will decide whether Strict PR stays or Deadline Extender PR rears his sympathetic head. This is the time to voice your progress. Based on your feedback, I'll decide what needs to be done regarding the November 30 deadline.
James, I'd like your feedback, too, since you're the one who can benefit the most from this decision.
Voice your thoughts as soon as possible, or brace yourself for the coming deadline. _________________ Progress Report:

Just a heads up to everyone who is "watching" this thread but not the rest of the forum much.
I have recently released a "staging demo" of my Heart of OHR game, see my website below or the thread on the forum to know what exactly I mean by "staging demo".
I also have another thread requesting for beta testers for this game, which will take place this weekend or sooner to help me in finding glitches and bugs. More info on the forum thread about this. I would prefer people who are not creating a game for the Heart of OHR to beta test, however I am open to idea, since the contest is nearing it's closing day. _________________ Current project: Chronoboy Adventures

Well, it is a wiki so anybody can add the section. You'd' probably do as good as job as anyone. Might wanna wait until the games come out, though, and do it all at once. |

Since I cannot seem to register on SlimeSalad, I just read Pepsi Rangers latest post there(finally), and also sent a PM to Moogle1 whom I believe is Mogri on SlimeSalad(they share some of the same games in the list).
I do hope I can gain access to SlimeSalad before Tuesday, as since that forum is much more active(16 pages for this topic), that's most likely where all the voting will be done. Since my game has been only listed here, people who are only on SlimeSalad won't see it yet, which is sad for me, as I wanted to get as much bug reports as possible before the 30th.
Pepsi Ranger wrote: | Games should be as complete as possible for the deadline, including all demo-exclusive endings (end of chapter scripts for example). |
I am really glad that I read your post on SlimeSalad there Pepsi Ranger. During the next day, I will need to make a quick conclusion(or awesome cliffhanger) to my game very soon. I plan on making the game very very long, but the time constrains of this contest sort of cut this a little short. I believe a nice cliffhanger at the right moment in the story will both make people give it a wonderful vote, and also make them want to come back after it's more complete to play more of the game to see what happens next.
The biggest issue I see about my game for this type of contest, is that since the game is very open ended, a review from one person may be completely different than from another. Experiences may vary. One small choice in the game can drastically alter the story, think along the lines of ChronoCross or Heavy Rain. _________________ Current project: Chronoboy Adventures

To officially kick off the Heart of the OHR Contest, I'm releasing an exclusive preview of my hopefully-summer release The Adventures of Powerstick Man: Extended Edition. The demo is the 99% upgraded version of the original game with all the new extended maps, extended battles (well, different battles, not longer battles), and new cutscenes, story, and so on.
http://www.slimesalad.com/forum/viewgame.php?t=3911
The preview will only be online during the month of December, and will be taken down on the day of the 10th anniversary (December 30, 2010). The demo itself is also limited and will expire in March, so be sure to play through it before then.
Although I've tried to keep up with the bugs as much as I could, other bugs constantly crop up, so it's possible that you may find some that I missed. I appreciate any reports if you do. As far as I know, bugs are strictly cosmetic, and will be squashed when TMC implements script multitasking (which this game is designed to use, so you will experience the occasional "stall" whenever it tries to handle too many scripts at once).
In any case, give it a try and let me know what you think. There should be roughly eight hours of gameplay here.
And check back regularly for updates to the preview game slot. I may post new materials from time to time. For now, you can download the game and two old trailers. I'll have a third trailer up very soon.
Enjoy.
Please note that this is not an official entry to the contest. This is strictly the kickoff game to get everyone interested in the Heart of the OHR.
Okay, guys, you've got less than 36 hours to get your entries ready. Don't procrastinate! _________________ Progress Report:

I admit procrastinated throughout the first few months of this contest basically getting almost nothing done, besides working on the tileset here and there, but that was basically it.
In the end, if I just step myself a proper schedule and didn't procrastinate, the game would be much more done and more of what I dreamed it to be. The Heart of OHR release, which I will release tomorrow night, will hopefully have a nice "To be continued..." marker at a very intense part of the story... This will signify that the playtester has gone as far as they can. The game will autosave just before this point and the demo will end automatically. When the more complete version is released, it will continue off exactly where they left off. I'm trying to go for a very cinematic approach here, as you can see. Hopefully the planned cliffhanger in a very story centric part of the game gets people more interested in my project for the final release. Might as well take advantage of what this contest has to offer, right? An audience, and a great marketing tool. _________________ Current project: Chronoboy Adventures

Early release time!
Motrya is an old-school RPG, similar to those from the Super Nintendo console, that chronicles Murlor's journey through a strange, but sometimes familiar fantasy world.
What if you were fixing to graduate from school, but had never actually done the work required? Murlor would know how you'd feel.
Murlor's story begins on the evening of his graduation from Yormus Academy, where students practice the art of Forlae, which you might call "Magic" in our world. That day, Murlor learns all about some dark, secret stuff, and when the unthinkable happens, his peaceful life at Yormus is thrown in to chaos. If you want to know the full story, you'll have to check the game out today!
You can download Motrya here now!
http://jshgaming.com/motrya/
This is the 24.5% version.
NOTE: The music is incomplete in this version, and will be changed by the time the 25% version is ready. Pardon that omission, but this is the best we could get done for HotOHR
