Disagree. The OHRRPGCE is an excellent starter engine. It gives you pretty much all the tools in one package, and that's it. Graphics editor, tiling system, combat system, general RPG-ish bits and pieces, all are in one place. This is great for anyone wanting to start out somewhat seriously in game design (note that I didn't say "game programming" - this is about design, not code). Once you get competent with the OHR, then you really should be moving on, learning a programming language, working with a more powerful, more complex engine.
It's just that most people in this community aren't competent yet and probably won't be ever, judging by what they release (if they release anything at all). _________________ UP DOWN UP DOWN LEFT LEFT RIGHT RIGHT A B START |

The OHR is almost incapable of good gameplay, yes. The OHR is sort of a hobbyist's kit for game design. It will satisfy the desire to make simple little games like Don't Push The Button, and even give a person the chance to make the RPG they fantasized about making for the NES or SNES.
I don't want to make games a career, so it satisfies me. For someone like Moogle1 at this stage in his education, the OHR probably feels almost like a toy, and for a professional like Hideo Kojima, it would probably feel like a joke.
The OHR is great for people with just an almost casual interest in game design, those who want to do it for fun or goofin' around or to take a break from real game designing or whatever they do. The next Metal Gear Solid or Katamari Damacy or Super Mario Brothers will not be born of the OHR. No feature length film made with Mario Paint is gonna win Sundance and no OHR game is gonna get Independent Game Of The Year. _________________ BANDIT REVOLVER, DOWNLOAD IT OR ELSE.

And I like the OHR because it's important, for people who wish to persue game design as a career, to experience game creation with severe limitations. It helps your appreciation with older games, and makes more advanced means of game creation feel liberating instead of overwhelming.
Also, if your looking for another step up from the OHR, I would suggest tinkering around with Flash. You can make some great games with it very easily, and some amazing games after learning more about it. And there's a huge wealth of information for people getting started. _________________ You got film in my video game!

Anyone who is a good judge of character. Also anyone who has had to deal with him in any way, even as minor as scrolling past and ignoring his posts. |

In it's current form, no. However, I have plans (as does TMC, phyrfox and James himself, I would think) to see the OHR be just as good as RPG Maker and the like. When (not if) that happens, we'll be able to have professional quality games easier.
Note that I said easier. Professional quality games are possible now. Heck, look at Wandering Hamster. It's not done, but it's damn good. (I know that someone is going to flame me for mentioning WH, but it deserves mention)
I don't know why everyone is set against YSoft so much... Ok, so a contest of his bombs. Big deal, people move on. I'm sure that there's a long explanation or two that someone might throw out to me, but Ysoft seems to be a pretty good guy from my limited experience. And, he made a nice graphics extractor.
Which brings me to a third point: He may not make games (publicly), but does that mean he should be excluded from the community? I haven't seen phyrfox make a game, I haven't made a game, there are plenty of people who don't make games. But, we do other things. I am a programmer. My games suck. So, I work on the engine. I can't comment on anyone else, so I won't.
Which also reminds me:
| Quote: | | If someone's actually serious, they should start with a programming language to begin with. |
I find that statement to be ignorant. If programming a complete game were easy, then the OHR and the like wouldn't exist would it? It's not easy to make a game, especially for someone not in the field. If they ARE in the field, then they're out of our league anyway. _________________ I stand corrected. No rivers ran blood today. You don't just wake up one day, and program a game. I never said you said it was easy. I'm saying that I disagree that you should start off by jumping into pure programming a game. Everyone should start off with one engine or another, if only to learn the nuiances of an RPG engine (or any game engine for that matter) before they're forced up a rather steep learning curve. _________________ I stand corrected. If you're talking about bread-and-butter, vanilla OHR, then maybe, and even then, only because we've all overplayed the standard OHR battle engine (and too many others like it). Throwing in plotscripting, the OHR can do most of what a pure-programmed game could do.
I only use OHR because I don't want to use my own graphics and sound routines. Okay, there are other options, but the higher the resolution I work with, the more my graphics suck.
On the other hand, the OHR is great at simulating the SNES feel... which is awesome. _________________

I actually did make games, 2 on the count that are on cp,
pokemon war, and dragon warrior, they are not complete games, but a very short demos.
and ohr is a great tool to start learning game design. look at ffh by fen, or even wandering hamster. or even trailblazers. from my opinion, they are great games. _________________ Try my OHR exporter/importer.
