  Interview with PK-Fortis

[DrShizuma] I'm here with PK-Fortis, administrator and owner of http://www.zantetsuken.com and its message boards, Author of Time Flies, the comic Awkward Stage as well as OHR Buzz!.
[DrShizuma] Let's start with some background info. What is your real name, age, and where do you live?
  [PK-Fortis] I'm Zack Corcoran... I'm 16, and I live in New Jersey.
[DrShizuma] PK Fortis is an interesting alias.. I'm sure you've explained this many times, but what does it mean, and its origins?
[PK-Fortis] Well, when I first needed an alias, it was on the RPGamer (but at that point, Square.net) message boards. I was obsessed with FF6 at the time, so I chose Pseudo-Kefka as my nick. However, my defaults file conflicted with the guy who had Kefka, and I had to change it. So, I held a poll, asking people for new names. Someone mentioned that the Fortis was Kefka's personal MagiTek armor, and someone else suggested PK. I just stuck those two suggestions.
[DrShizuma] The square.net forums? I for one found O.H.R.R.P.G.C.E through those. how about you?
[PK-Fortis] How did I find OHRRPGCE? That's kind of interesting. Around the same time I was frequenting RPGamer, I read the news that ASCII's RPGMaker was not coming to PSX. I was pretty pissed, because ever since I played my first RPG (Super Mario RPG), I wanted to make one of my own. So, as a last-ditch effort, I searched for "RPG Maker" on Metacrawler. Lo and behold, the OHRRPGCE page was buried among the results.
[DrShizuma] You could say OHRRPGCE is better then ASCII's RPGMaker because of its sense of community. What where your first impressions/experiences with the OHR community?
[PK-Fortis] Everyone seemed really nice. The community was small then, and the MB was basically devoted to what the "Help Me" board is devoted to now. Experience didn't matter, the community's first goal was basically troubleshooting.
[DrShizuma] Which MB was that? I can't quite remember
[PK-Fortis] Ken Soto's board, which later became Neodeath's board.
[DrShizuma] Ken Soto was pretty interesting.. Did you know him well?
[PK-Fortis] Not really. I visited his page a lot when I didn't know how do to anything, and I loved his game, Dark Sword, but that was basically it.
[DrShizuma] so who where your first friends in the community?
[DrShizuma] I loved dark Sword too. :)
[PK-Fortis] Wasn't it great? Gregor's theme is kickass. :P ... I think my first real friend, or at least someone I knew well, was KitFox4. He made the first great HappyFace game, called HappyFace Land. I really liked his sense of humor, and the way his game worked, so I offered to do some tiles for him, and we talked on AOL quite often. He disappeared from the community shortly after. Any other friends I've made in the community were all through the IRC channel, so my first few friends were also HoFonix, AKA UberSteve, Kat (who has since left), Chenzi9X, and Grimtooth.
[DrShizuma] This was probably around early 98 right? So when did you start your message board, and what where your reasons for starting one?
[PK-Fortis] I started my messagebaord after the very first large-scale flame war, on Neodeath's MB. I forget the details of the argument itself, but it ended with Neodeath disabling the board entirely, leaving the community MB-less. I was always interested in running a board, so I decided to set one up myself.
[DrShizuma] I think I remember this flame-war. So did everybody flock to your board right away, or did it take time?
[PK-Fortis] If I remember correctly, it didn't take long for people to return. I think I emailed James about it when I created the board, and he updated the link, and even made the second post.
[DrShizuma] Not many people in the community know James very well, I'd imagine perhaps you're an exception?
[PK-Fortis] Well, I may know him better than some, since nowadays he's something of an enigma, only posting very occasionally. He used to post a lot back when the OHR was young, so I don't know him too well, but I do know him a little bit.
[DrShizuma] You where in Red Murdock correct? When did you join that group?
[PK-Fortis] I joined RMS when it was StellarX Software... I think it was shortly after I got into IRC... sometimes during the summer of 1998.
[DrShizuma] And the first game you worked on was?
[PK-Fortis] Well, first came my constantly ongoing project, Blasphemous Saga Fantasy (later renamed to Time Flies), but my first project in SXS/RMS was A Sonic The Hedgehog RPG StellarX and I were making... that didn't last very long. :P
[DrShizuma] hahaha. I think think probably quite a few people read your comics on Zantetsuken from the message board. Tell me a bit about your comics, I remember when you started they where barely updated, when did you get the drive to work on them?
[PK-Fortis] Well, the first webcomic I ever did was OHR Buzz, which I've recently revived. It wasn't updated much because when I started it, drawing it was annoying. Later, I started Awkward Stage, now my foremost webcomic. That was easier because I drew that on paper and scanned it. When I got so much positive feedback on AS, that's when I started to work really hard on my comics.
[DrShizuma] Do you have like, aspirations to be the next Kurtz or Holkins. Or is it just a thing you do for your friends?
[PK-Fortis] Popularity doesn't matter much to me, although it would be very cool if AS was as well known as PvP or Penny Arcade. The reason I'm doing my comics is simply that I enjoy drawing, and, in the case of AS, it's a place for me to vent my emotions and rant, but in such a way that others enjoy it. :P
[DrShizuma] Let's get back to Time Flies, which I know you are still working on. What are your aspirations for that game? Changes over the first demo?
[PK-Fortis] Well, like I previously mentioned, I've always wanted to make an RPG, because they're fun. My goal with Time Flies is to make a great game, basically. It's like a tribute to my favorite RPGs. As far as changes from the first demo go, there are probably too many to list, but I will note the ones I can think of... A different system of enemy encounters, more secrets, houses actually have insides (a complaint from the first one), and it will definitely be longer than the first. Right now, it's almost 20 minutes longer than the previous demo.
[DrShizuma] I really enjoyed TF and am looking forward to the next one. What OHR games interest you, Past/Present/Future?
[PK-Fortis] Thanks... Well, I'm interested in a lot of "old school" OHR games, like FUABMX, Dark Sword, and Wandering Hamster. I also enjoyed Monterey Penguin and Memoria (haven't we all...). I'm looking forward to the enigmatic "First Fifth", and Moogle1's SimRPG, currently.
[DrShizuma] First Fifth? I've never heard of that one (it IS enigmatic!). So I suppose you've played FUABMXV4 that came out recently?
[PK-Fortis] I forget the real name... it's Rinku's game.. he changed the title, but the "First Fifth" part remains.... I downloaded FUABMXv4 a little while ago, it's pretty fun. I'm still leveling up to tackle the caverns, though. :P
[DrShizuma] You seem to be a pretty busy guy, Your comic, TF, and The Message Board. What do you like to do outside of the community?
[PK-Fortis] Well, I like to work on my website in general, which includes the comics, and most weekends I see my friends. During the week, if I'm not online I'm either watching TV or playing my latest favorite game (right now, it's Final Fantasy 4 PSX)
[DrShizuma] I'd imagine running the message board must not be easy at times... Have you even just wanted to quit?
[PK-Fortis] It has it's ups and downs. I let a lot of things slide by, like mild swearing and things of that sort. But, sometimes, people will get out of hand, and I'll have to delete things, then people will be like "WHY DID YOU DO THAT YOU NEVER DELETE STUFF"... but on the whole, it's pretty fun, and I've never really considered quitting.
[DrShizuma] Really? most people I know would of thought about it a few times. :) That is a good quality about you though, you are not a quitter
[DrShizuma] I've asked enough questions today. Anything you'd like to say to the readers?
[PK-Fortis] Keep making your games, and make sure you're having fun with it. If it's not fun, you shouldn't be doing it.
[DrShizuma] Okay, it's been a pleasure talking to you.
  [PK-Fortis] Same here.
  [DrShizuma] Thank You.
