Here I go again, stepping in for another round of pain with a newbie game. Except I've all ready reviewed Duck & MJ 2. Hmm. Lets call it Duck and MJ 2.1 then. Oh, and it says I have to replay the whole thing over again, because of changes to the plot. Almost an hour's worth of reviewing down the drain. I'm starting to wonder if God hates me, and this is my punishment. Storyline: The first 45 minutes are exactly the same plot, same spelling errors, same painfully chopped up dialogue. You still can't buy anything at Icee's store, still have to wander the maps killing "Tiny Ants". Yargh. I hate to admit it, but the plot does start getting better. Turns out Bunny has been taken over by a hostile bug creature that's burrowed into his brain. Who proceeds to kidnap other members of your team almost as fast as you can recruit them. Duck finally gets fed up with the whole thing and goes to ask the Great Cookie, who is sure to have a way to defeat this dastardly bug. Perhaps a economy sized can of bug spray. Of course Spektrak (the bug) has gotten there first, in another body, and you have to fight him off. The great cookie tells you that Spek is planing to take all the cookie's power away, and that Duck is (of course) expected to stop him. After some more tracking, you find Spek's base and all your kidnapped team members, who join up and help kill Spek. With his last dying words he informs you that a band of airship pirates named the Wuggles, (Strikes terror into your heart, with a name like that.) are still going to destroy the cookies. You head off to the pirate base, only to find out that you can't land on the island. Because JSH didn't bother playing his own game and didn't allow ships to land on it. After some F11 use, I found that it was the end of the demo anyway. Wee. Graphics: Definitely improved from the last demo. Most objects redone or touched up, and a handful of new things added to the mix. While the graphics overall are still uninspiring, at least there was some effort involved. This isn't standard newbie stuff, but it doesn't really keep me enthralled. Gameplay: Basically the same, only the enemies give you slightly more exp and there is a interesting change class system for all the characters near the end of the demo. Though unique, you really never have a chance to mess with it. Armor and weapons are still in painfully short supply, and all you have to do is purchase large amounts of wafers to plow right through the game. Towns are boring and empty, filled with cameos of people from the first game and unhelpful villagers. The boat is a clever way to access new areas, while still keeping near the earlier towns. Very few new enemies, none of which offer any challenge. Music: Some new songs have been added, which helps the game alot. I actually kept my speakers on this time. Good choices. Sidenote: JSH, with all the games you've made and sent in to O:OHR, I've seen your talent improve by leaps and bounds. If you would only spend the time to remove all the little errors in your games, you'd be a noteworthy game designer. To be blunt, I'm pretty sure that I'm going to be one of the few OHRers to actually play this game. People just aren't interested in rushed demos and poorly designed storylines. Take some more time with you next project, and I'm sure that your next game will be a real gem for OHR. Scores:
