I just had the sudden realization: We have a lot of games with "Dream" in the title.
Autumn Dream,
City of Dreams + Soundtrack,
Crecent Dream + Soundtrack,
DoZ: Sour Dreams,
Dreams of Light and Darkness,
Dreams of the Seven Orbs,
Eternal Dreams,
Illumnis Saga Side Story- Heavenly Dreamers,
Moon Pie: Crumbling Dreams,
Sword of Jade: Parallel Dreams + Parody.
Does anyone else find this odd? _________________ A broken clock is still right twice a day. |

Meh, I don't think it's really of big concern; I didn't even notice this until you brought it up. _________________

It's because it's a generic fantasy word. In very few of these games (if any) will you find that the game has anything to do with dreams. _________________

I remember Little Nemo! I used to play that game. Freaky stuff. _________________ "Everyone has 200,000 bad drawings in them, the sooner you get them out the better."

See also "Destiny", "Eternal", and several others.
The most generic name possible is "Eternal Dreams of Destiny".
There's also a problem with naming movies. I quote from the book "How Not to Write a Screenplay" by DM Flinn:
Generic Titles are very popular these days. But bear in mind that someone else out there is calling his script the same time. In the last few years, I've read a half a dozen spec sheets titled "Clean Sweep," and at least a dozen titled "Dead Wrong." ... Why generic titles are so popular is beyond me, since they neither jump out at you, nor give you an impression of their content, two virtues which advertising experts advise. Yet in a recent visit to a video store, I noticed the shelves groaning with titles like...
Above Suspicion, Above the Law, Beyond Justice, Boiling Point, Code of Silence, Cop, D.O.A, Dead Again, Dead to Rights, Dead Ringers, Dead of Winter, Dead Calm, Deadly Outbreak, Deadly Surveillance, Deep Cover, Extreme Measures, Extreme Justice, Extreme Prejudice, Fair Game, Fatal Error, Fatal Attraction, Hard to Kill, Hard Evidence, Homicide, Lethal Weapon, Magnum Force, Maniac Cop, Marked for Death, Martial Law, Maximum Risk, New York Cop, Out for Justice, Physical Evidence, Serial Killer, Sudden Impact, Sudden Death, Super Cop, Time to Die, Time to Kill, True Crime, Under Investigation, Under Suspicion, Unlawful Entry, etc.
Obviously, if you've got a good game, the game will live up to the title and people will remember the name, but if you're a new chum with a brand new game, do us all a favor and name it something not generic. If I see any more "Adventures of _____ ", I'll start making idle threats at people. At least let the title give you some indication of what the game is about, and if people are interested, they'll download it. (look how many downloads Hentai Quest has) _________________ You got film in my video game!

Amen to that.
Topic deviation: And generic titles are only a small portion of a grander problem. I learned that the trick to avoiding certain CLICHÉS was to think of what most people WOULD do, then do something else. Henceforth, a list of known CLICHÉS has been a handy tool. Who here has a list of generic plots and characters they would care to share with us? I'm not sure, but it could put a lot of meaningless banter to rest.
PS: I recall- I think it was Fenrir- someone posting a bunch of generic dungeon descriptions a couple years ago, or so... That was so freaking long ago, though. I'll look for it...
I'ma go play "TheAdventureOfTheQuestingFantasyDreamCrystals" now. ¬¬ _________________ Planning Project Blood Summons, an MMORPG which will incinerate all of the others with it's sheer brilliance...

Stop right there. This is what we call "going off on a tangent". Try to avoid it. _________________ You got film in my video game!

Leroy, there is a site with a list of a LOT of clichés on it.
Presenting "The Grand List of Console RPG Clichés":
http://project-apollo.net/text/rpg.html
Some of these you read and think "Oh yeah...that IS common in games", heh. Or worse, you think "I was going to put that into my own game" .
Was this the site you were looking for? Although it still gives a comprehensive list of what not to do in a game (because it's been overdone ). _________________ Current Projects:

"Eternal Dreams of Destiny," huh? Reminds me of Shaede's "Dreams of Adventure," but that one was about a kid who dreams of adventure and finds he is really a knight in another dimension.
Personally, I have no problem with generic-sounding names if they are accurate descriptors (as in that case). I also don't care for names that have nothing to do with the game, original though they may be. _________________
