[Edit] Don't click these images, for the love of God.

I find that one of my most BLARING problems in illustration is SYMETRY. I don't even think I spelled it right...

Anyway, here is what I mean... I will use crosshairs to draw your eyes to the points where I think symetry is lacking severely. If you find any points I missed, do tell. :s

Can you see how neither side matches the other perfectly? Some artists are able to accomplish this, but it seems to be a problem for me.

And here, the symetry was a little harder to obtain because of the awkward posture that the Toadapan warrior was in.

Given that Chrikk are supposed to be imperfect and consistantly mutated, they should at least have some semblance of symetry, I think. The major problem here is the size contrast between the upper and lower body. Should his legs be longer? Thicker?

Or am I being too critical of myself?
In any case, enjoy. This is my semi-update on what I've been doing (and cannot stop doing, which is bad).

PS: If you wish to hear more detailed explainations of what each of these are, I will be around within a week with a link to their deviant art locations when I put them up there. There will be your back stories, which I feel are essential to these illustrations.

Wow. I like the first and last one a lot. The first one is great because it's not perfectly symmetrical I think. Is the second one wearing a catmask or something? It's hard for me to tell. They're all really detailed, and I'm at a lack of any real good commentary or critique, it's kind of out of my expertise.

Man... Leroy. You should do illustrations for Fantasy novels. These new books lack good drawings, if any.

They all rock. I love the last one.

Leroy, our eyes/brain are programmed in such a way that asymmetrical details look "normal". Ever noticed that a person's face looks normal to us? If you look closer, you notice that a face is asymmetrical. Unless it's really really obvious, our brain doesn't notice it. That being said, if it's completely symmetrical it looks "funny" or just looks plain wrong.

Your first picture, while slightly asymmetrical, looks better and less "forced" than a symmetrical drawing would. It'd look traced if it was exactly the same on both sides, or just a mirror image.

The last picture...if his legs were longer he'd look like he'd be off balance and would fall over, theoretically.

Asymmetry makes a picture look interesting and appealing. For example - why else does Meteor (our CP mascot) have armour on one side of the body and none on the other? If it were identical on both sides it'd look boring and probably like it was traced or just mirrored.

Anyway, great drawings Leroy. Love the details in them, it looks like it took you forever to do them, heh. Either that, or you're really good at shading Raspberry!

This isn't what I was tought. Maybe I got stupid teachers... Maybe I got stupid... I'm sure I agree, though, nothing is perfect. Thanks for the uplifting critique.

This is true. It could be, because most fantasy/sci-fi novels aren't interesting enough to have good illustrations. :o

Haha. You ask a good question, good sir. I think the second one is the strangest. It's eyes are hiding under it's helmet, which is studded with bolts (one of my signiture things). It has a ring through it's nose, and is blowing smoke out of it's nostrils.
[Edit:] I realize, now, I did the smoke wrong when I made this. The smoke isn't "blowing" out of his nose: it's coming out, but not blowing out. Also, it's very light and hard to make out. This picture has a lot more potential.

You might find it entertaining that the Toadapan race is almost constantly wasted on drugs. Smokin'

Thanks for the comments.
Any further comments are more than welcome. I love answering your questions. Happy

Whoa... The, like, top one reminds me of a cracked-up psychedellic song. It's very weird and fantastical. Very nice, though.

Congratulations, sire. You have found a portal to Haven. Raspberry!

Should "Aracnasapien" be "Arachnosapien" or is there something I'm missing?

Symmetry is just hard. It's one of every artists' common problems. I agree, though, it's better if you have a little asymmetry; just minimize it a bit, so it doesn't look like a 9th grader's drawing, and you'll be set.

Btw, that wasn't an insult.

It's usually best to use your own judgement when trying to figure out the degree of asymmetry in an art piece. Usually, symmetry only works in drawings which have geometric shapes (particularly sci-fi drawings) over organic ones. Sometimes, a lot of asymmetry can look good, but is dependent on the overall composition you're trying to accomplish. Just keep that in mind and your drawings will look fine. For example, your sketches are quite good as-is. Not too much asymmetry to kill the mood of the pieces, but don't look forced either Happy.

Symmetry can be produced on any angle, not just horizontally or vertically.

yes but drawing a perfectly straight cross over something that's drawn at an angle makes no sense.

Perhaps he's trying to see if he can get things to look the same thing on both sides irrespective of the body's position? I don't know what Leroy's thinking, after all.
