Hey all,

I noticed there is finally a Linux version of OHR, just downloaded it and it seems to work great first try. How did the Linux version come about anyhows? Was it ported after it was licensed under the GPL license by someone else? Just curious, but way to do!

Still, it's makes me think... How was it ported to Linux incredible fast, or am I just jumping to that conclusion. How was it compiled, using FreeBASIC, a very close clone to QB might I add.

I just noticed, I am missing a few vital execuables that I used in the DOS version, the HamsterScript compilers. I guess... If I had to, I could either attempt to compile it under FreeBASIC for Linux or use a DOS emulator to compile the scripts.

Anyways, way to go, I guess I will be once again playing all of the wonderful RPGs which I once played using OHR for DOS. Plus, I can get back to creating RPGs yet again. If only more game engines would port to Linux(mainly ZeldaClassic) Sad...

Does anyone know by the way, how I would implement Zelda-style(Action/RPG) fighting within OHR using HamsterScript? Any links and/or source code would be great.

Welcome to the community Happy .

There are some links on the game list for zelda type attacks. And check the user Moogle1's signature because his site (the mooglery) has a bunch of helpful plotscripts.

But

I wouldn't recommend a zelda style hack n slash for OHR, it usually comes out quite buggy. Make sure you play Smokey Magoo's Grand Adventure on the gamelist.

The Linux port was accomplished during transition from QB to FB, as FreeBasic can be compiled in Linux. I believe sound is still an issue with the Linux version, but the ability to play and create games without dosbox is a huge step forward.

As far as the Zelda Type attacks, here's a tech demo made by James Paige with the plotscript included: http://www.castleparadox.com/gamelist-display.php?game=268

Welcome to the community.

Hspeak is written in Euphoria, which appears to have a linux version, but is a commercial product and the free version will probably have some restrictions (I know the Windows version does).

Yes, and yes. Simon (PlayerOne on the forums) did the dirty work of porting it to FreeBasic so it would run in Windows. Then, Inferior Minion tweaked it so that it would run in Linux.

Either way, all of these changes were merged back into the main source, and all was Good.

Well, HSpeak is written in Euphoria. If there's a Linux version, then theoretically, you could run HSpeak there. But, it may need tweaking to account for some differences (such as "\" to "/", etc.). Or, just use DosBox Happy

From what I hear, they have a Mac version in the works, so I can only assume that they have a Linux version too. Maybe it's even been announced publicly, I don't know, I don't follow the forums too closely. Either way, this is OHR Raspberry!

The tutorial that IM linked is a good start, although it's basically just "Put sword out, destroy NPC in front of me", nothing at all advanced, like health, or monsters or anything.

Haha, imagine finding this topic here. Echoes my sentiments exactly. I used to use OHR way back in 2001-2002, although I never released anything I worked on, mostly because my art skills are majorly subpar. When I switched to Linux, I gave up on using OHR, so stumbling across the linux version is majorly awesome for me. Now I just need to learn what's been changed since Handshake. Ha ha ha!

Welcome.
I've had OHR since 2001, and have yet to produce anything more than sub-par, if you ask me. And just look around the game list. Note, even, the handy random game showcase on the main page. 80% of the games it showcases have subpar graphics, but the gameplay is all that we care about here. Kederaji Tajorn; release the beast!

this is an interesating conversation. Do continue. Happy

The beast is undergoing major reconstruction at the advice of Hachi-Roku. We'll see how it goes.

No, I didn't post on Castle Paradox back in the day. I might have, had I produced something worth posting.

:/

CP didn't even exist until the very end of 2002. Before that, it was Op: OHR for reviews and Zantetsuken for MB discussion.

I knew about Op:OHR, that's where I got the games I played. Nevertheless, I am here, new, yet somehow not quite new. Oookay...
