I used OHR in the past while creating games as a hobby. Then on a day in which my computer bombed and my off-site copy could not be found, I decided to take a break from the fatigues of creating my games. I never got back to it until now, probably 4 years or so later. Now I'm back and can't help but feel lost... I need help.

Welcome to the future lost ancient. I, am BattleBlaze. Bringer of...stuff.

Currently the OHR has made the warp out of DOS to windows. The whole program still works the same just with new plotscripting commands less buggy. And you can import MIDIs directly. The text editor dosen't suck anymore. And the max limit on almost everything has been increased.

Because of all this the standard of a good game has risen. What would a decent game back then would most likey be crap if released now.

To check out allt he new stuff look at the whats new txt (OHR is now part of the Wiki)

To see most of the new members check the "I'm new thread at on the announcemnt" board XD

Welcome to the future

Things are indeed amazing now. We have editable hero names, strings, advanced saveslot manipulation, plotscript execution by ID # (a personal favorate), lots of things. It's now open source, and we've got a great dev team doing all sorts of things (I understand that multiple layers and partial transparency is being played around with, though I could be wrong...).

Out of curiousity, what state do you remember the OHR being in when you left?

The clearest subject I recall are the forums still being integrated within Hamster Republic itself... Oh and doing all the plotscripting in notepad, but that was just a pain... But overlapping layers and transparent tiles are something I wished they had back when I was designing games still... Whenever that was, 2001 or 2002 sometime...

Exciting. Big grin Welcome back after such a long time. Feel like a fish out of water, eh? Understandable. I can't really offer you much more help than the others have already offered, but I want to just give you a kind word.

I bet you are as excited as I am about the things you can do with the new OHR.
It'll be great fun.

So am I missing something out of the whole "OHR running in windows"? It comes up in a command prompt window and looks just like the dos version. Is that wrong or did I just expect the wrong thing from hearing "windows"?

The new FB versions are fullscreem. (if you want to resize em press alt enter) but the actual gameplay is different. And if ou havent noticed the music sounds way better.

And we have more way more things that can go on inside of game. It does run the same, only better.

It opens a prompt? That's not right. When you hit Alt-Enter, does it still work in the window?

In regards to the part I highlighted: No, it isn't. Gameplay should be the same in both versions. Plz take PHC's advice.

And, that doesn't even make any sense.

I'm guessing you were expecting pull-down menus and buttons and black Arial text on grey backgrounds. When we say it was ported to windows, we mean that it is now a native win32 executable that can access the whole 32-bit memory space, rather than a 16-bit DOS program has to run in a MS-DOS virtualization and can only access the first 640k of memory.

The user interface is still the same as it was in the DOS version.

Which reminds me, Allegro has this nice GUI toolkit, which we could rewrite Custom with...

Actually, now that I think about it, redoing the UI of Custom may not be a totally bad idea. Some time.

As James cleared up for me, I was under the impression that it was going to open up in multiple different windows in a GUI type format. Now I understand.

Such things are the sort of things that I think of as happening between now and an infinite length of time away, the logic being that if we work on the engine forever, that's the sort of thing you expect in the finished product. A good estimation might therefore be halfway to completion date (infinity?).

Hmm... is infinity a rational number?

Anyway, I was playing around with said GUI stuff, and while it's good for basic stuff, it's lacking in more advanced features, like non-modal dialogues, or heck, dialogues at all. We could modify it (it's exceedingly extensible), and I already created a dialogue "class", but we'd be better off with something like GTK or wxWidgets, if there's a C version.

Anyway, as for your estimate, we already know when we'll be done: So when will it be finished?. Thus, by your logic, we'll have a GUI... in October, 2071.

That would mean that I would have to keep messing with this until the age 83... Somehow that just doesn't seem sad to me...
