I'm starting another game, and a while after creating it, I ran into the problem of making a forest tileset. I realized that I don't ever remember making a forest (well, a good one) before. After a few minutes, I came up with this hideousness:

Can anyone show me an efficient tileset that makes attractive forests as an example? Thanks.

Creating a tileset really isn't that difficult. You're really not trying to make an entire map in the tileset editor; you're just trying to make the tiles that will be used when you go to make your map. The only way you should want to do a full-picture tileset would be making a 320x200 bitmap picture in an outside program and upload it in the tileset editor.

If you really want to mess around with tilesets, feel free to download any Realmsoft game (by Sir Phoenix Drake or myself, who are actually the same person but I had two screennames). The password is always myrmidon. I really don't care what you do with the games either.

The grass tile looks nice. And it's good that you're trying to make it look more interesting than a horde of identical trees. The blur effect looks really bad though. I recommend using the blur tool absolutely never. It also looks very odd that the edge curves on one side but is square on the other. Personally I'd recommend shrinking it all down. The trees don't need to be quite that tall and the fade from black to green doesn't need to be so long. I'd also recommend adding some leaf detail. You don't need to draw every leaf, of course, but if we could see a few that'd be better than just a green blur.

I don't know of an example to show you, but I think you're pretty close to the right idea already.

I only used the blur effect to make the tiles more universal, so that they could be used wherever I needed them;however, this came out horribly, and I used way too many tiles. I'm trying to make a tileset with enough tiles to not achieve that "horde of identical trees" effect, but I also don't want too many tiles that it takes up the entire set.

All right, thanks Setu. I think I'll take a look at those.

Just make sure that, if importing from an external BMP editor, your individual tiles are 20 px by 20 px. and fill up the 320x200, so you get 160 tiles.

If you get stuck for ideas, just punch "sprites" into a google image search, and you'll get a load of retro images
