I've had my share of troubles with making sprites look good, in the past. I can do walkabouts with no real problems, but it's battle sprites that get me stuck. Oookay... (Mostly posing and basic construction of them, no issues with color or anything like that.)

So, I was wondering, what do all of you do? Y'know...start from the feet, the head? Sketch it all out first? Scan in some lineart and go over it pixel by pixel?

I'm really in need of help for this...Thanks, in advance.

its best to start with a stick figure of the pose then from foot to head draw the rest of the sprite.

What I do, is draw the head first, get it looking good, then work your way down. However, it's smartest to not draw the arms right away. Because your characters arms will be animating (attack A, attack B, etc. etc.). So yeah, head to toe, then add some arms. That can work with everything by the way, walkabouts, enemies, you name it.

Before you start pixelating, I suggest you get an idea of what it should look like. I usually sketch out my hero sprites, their attack styles, weaponry and the etc. Then I just use MS-paint until the black outline looks right. Once you get the outline, the coloring in is pretty simple.

[edit] My alternative approach to sprites is just to use the pencil tool (in black) and create the outline. You don't need to do this carefully, just get the basic outline of the sprite. Once this is done, you can remove the excess black and replace it with color.
